Spikers Sweep SCSU in Sixth NE-10 Victory

WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The University of New Haven women's volleyball team defeated Southern Connecticut State University 3-0 (25-11, 25-10, 25-18) Wednesday night at Charger Gymnasium. With the win the Chargers improve to 13-1 overall and 6-0 in the Northeast-10 Conference, while the Owls fall to 9-8 overall and 2-4 in the NE-10.

The Chargers scored the final six points of the opening set to take a quick 25-11 victory. Tymika Duncan (Trinidad, West Indies) served five-of-eight consecutive points in the second set which gave the Chargers a 23-6 lead late in the match. The Owls rallied with four points late in the match, but the Elizabeth Akinbiyi (Miami Gardens, Fla.) sealed the victory with a kill for the 25th point. In the final set, UNH and SCSU played much closer, but Akinbiyi and Duncan again rallied the Chargers and gave them a 25-18 victory in the final set. Duncan hammered the final kill off an assist from Chelsey Alpough (Torrance, Calif.).

Senior outside hitter Sara Malmlov (Lindesberg, Sweden)led the Chargers in the match. She tallied 15 kills, three assists, two aces, 11 digs and two total blocks. Keidy Candelaria (Vega Baja, P.R.) added 11 kills, nine digs, two assists and two total blocks. Candelaria also hit as a .455 clip, while registering only one error in 22 total attempts. Duncan enjoyed a productive night with six kills, five blocks and a team-high .600 hitting percentage.

Alpough handed out 32 total assists, while libero Heather Ladao (West Covina, Calif.) led the team with 15 digs.

As a team, UNH posted a .347 hitting percentage, 46 kills, 48 digs and seven blocks. The Chargers held Southern to 12 total kills on 84 attempts.

New Haven returns to action on Saturday, October 9 when they travel to Le Moyne College. Match time in Syracuse, N.Y. is set for 12 p.m.
