Women's Volleyball Defeats Le Moyne in Four Sets

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The University of New Haven women's volleyball team defeated Le Moyne College 3-1 (25-16, 25-17, 19-25, 25-12) Saturday afternoon in Syracuse, N.Y. The Chargers improve to 14-1 overall and 7-0 in the Northeast-10 Conference with the win, while the Dolphins fall to 10-8, 3-4 in conference play.

The Chargers quickly jumped into the lead in the opening set and led 11-7 in the first half of the set. New Haven took a nine-point lead on Tymika Duncan's sixth-straight serve to take a 23-14 lead. Keidy Candelaria concluded the set with a kill which gave the Chargers a 25-16 victory.

The second set was much closer in the early going. Le Moyne kept the score close, leading by as many as three, 11-8, before New Haven went on a 5-0 run to take a 13-11 lead. Another 4-0 run later in the set gave the Chargers a 17-12 lead. New Haven then scored seven of the set's final 13 points to seal a 25-17 victory.

The third set began much like the second set did, playing very close. The teams were tied at 10-10 before the Dolphins took the lead for good. Le Moyne led by as many as six points and eventually earned the set victory by six, 25-19.

The Chargers sealed the win with a quick victory in the final set. The Chargers opened a 12-4 lead and went on to grab the victory by a final score of 25-12.

Candelaria led the Chargers with 14 kills and only three errors on 26 attempts (.423 hitting percentage). She added four digs and two aces as well. Sara Malmlov tallied 12 kills, six digs and two blocks. Chelsey Alpough handed out 37 assists, while Heather Ladao led the team with 12 digs.

The Chargers return to action on Wednesday, October 13 when they host Dowling College at Charger Gymnasium. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
