Women’s Volleyball Sweeps Saint Anselm on Senior Night

WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The University of New Haven women’s volleyball team honored its senior class members on Friday night, as the Chargers defeated Saint Anselm College in three sets (25-9, 25-11 and 25-10) on Senior Night at Chargers Gymnasium. With the win, UNH improved to 22-2 on the season and 14-0 in the Northeast-10 Conference. The Hawks dropped to 3-16 overall and 2-12 in the league.

In the first set, the Chargers used three strings of five or more consecutive points, taking a commanding lead. Heather Ladao closed out the set with three aces on the final four serves, solidifying a 25-9 victory. Sara Malmlov led an offensive attack that registered 12 kills and three errors on 34 total attempts.

New Haven posted similar statistics in the second game, resulting in its next win of the night. The Chargers tallied 12 kills and three errors on 21 total attempts en route to a 25-11 thrashing. Four different members of the squad recorded kills, while Heather Ladao and Steffi Faure anchored the back row.

The third and final set of the match featured another comfortable victory for the home team. The Chargers raced out to a 10-3 lead behind terrific serving from Chelsey Alpough, who collected two aces in the surge. Malmlov and Keidy Candelaria led the team in kills as UNH concluded the match with a 25-10 triumph.

Malmlov finished the match with a game-high 11 kills and zero errors on 22 total attempts (.500 hitting percentage). Candelaria added eight kills and 12 digs, while Liz Akinbiyi and Tymika Duncan chimed in with five and four kills respectively. Ladao and Faure combined for 16 digs on the night and Chelsey Alpough paced the offense with 27 helpers.

The Chargers return to action on Tuesday, November 9 with the opening round of the Northeast-10 Conference Tournament at 7 p.m. New Haven will host the eighth seed of the tourney at Charger Gymnasium.
