WALTHAM, Mass. - The University of New Haven women's volleyball team defeated the University of Bridgeport 3-1 (25-23,22-25,25-16,25-23) Friday evening at the Bentley University Invitational in Waltham, Mass. With the win the Chargers improve to 3-1 on the season, Bridgeport falls to 3-1.
Sophomore
Keidy Candelaria (Vega Baja, Puerto Rico/Bayamon Military Academy), senior
Sara Malmlov (Lindesberg, Sweden/Sheridan College) and junior
Elizabeth Akinbiyi (Miami Gardens, Fla./Chaminade-Madonna Prep.) each tallied double figure kills. Candelaria went 19-for-46 with six errors for a .283 hitting percentage. Malmlov went 15-for-38 and Akinbiyi went 12-for-23.
Setter
Chelsey Alpough (Torrance, Calif./South / Western New Mexico Univ. ) handed out 55 assists, while the defense was led by
Heather Ladao (West Covina, Calif./Rowland ) with 16 digs. Malmlov added 15 digs in the back row.
The Chargers, who played the Purple Knights for the second time in six days, tallied a team hitting percentage of .283 and held Bridgeport to a .194 hitting percentage.
New Haven returns to action tomorrow afternoon when they take on Bentley University and Georgian Court University in a pair of very important NCAA Regional matches. UNH plays Georgian Court at 1 p.m. and Bentley University at 3:30 p.m.
