Volleyball Wins Two More to Complete Three-Match Sweep at Bentley Invite

WALTHAM, Mass. - The University of New Haven women's volleyball team defeated Georgian Court University 3-0 (25-9, 25-11, 25-15) and Bentley University 3-1 (25-15, 25-14, 24-26, 25-11) on the final day of competition at the Bentley Invitational. The Chargers improve to 5-1 with the two victories.

The Chargers defeated Georgian Court in straight sets and improved to 4-1 after their second match of the tournament. UNH defeated GCU 25-9, 25-11, 25-15 and managed to hit at a .400 clip, while holding Georgian Court to a -.075 hitting percentage.

Three Chargers tallied seven for more kills in the match, including Sara Malmlov (Lindesberg, Sweden/Sheridan College), Elizabeth Akinbiyi (Miami Gardens, Fla./Chaminade-Madonna Prep.), and Keidy Candelaria (Vega Baja, Puerto Rico/Bayamon Military Academy). Akinbiyi and Candelaria each recorded a hitting percentage over .500 in the match as well, while Chelsey Alpough (Torrance, Calif./South / Western New Mexico Univ. ) tallied 26 assists.

In their second match of the day, against NE-10 foe Bentley, the Chargers also fought hard and pulled off a four-set victory. Candelaria and Malmlov each led the team with 14 kills, while Alpough added 37 assists. Ladao led the backrow with 25 digs in the second match.

The Chargers went 3-0 at the Bentley Invitational and had two players named to the All-Tournament Team, Alpough and Heather Ladao (West Covina, Calif./Rowland ). Alpough, with impressive numbers throughout the tournament, was named the tournament MVP.

New Haven returns to action on Wednesday, September 16 when they travel to Queens College for a non-conference match up. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
