Volleyball Defeats C.W. Post in Four Sets

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. - The University of New Haven women's volleyball team defeated C.W. Post 3-1 (25-18, 25-17, 20-25, 25-23) Wednesday night at the Pratt Recreation Center. With the win the Chargers improve to 6-1 this season, while the Pioneers fall to 6-3.

The Chargers were led by outside hitters Keidy Candelaria (Vega Baja, Puerto Rico/Bayamon Military Academy) and Sara Malmlov (Lindesberg, Sweden/Sheridan College) who tallied 16 and 15 kills, respectively. Candelaria hit at an incredible .406 clip (16 kills, 3 errors, 32 attempts). Chelsey Alpough (Torrance, Calif./South / Western New Mexico Univ. ) handed out 40 assists, while four Chargers recorded double-digit digs in the match.

After playing very close through eight points, but the Chargers took off and held a 15-11 lead later in the set. The Chargers took a 24-15 lead, but the Pioneers rallied and scored three straight before the Chargers took a 25-18 victory.

Continuing with their opening set victory, the Chargers took an early 4-1 lead in the second set. UNH eventually opened a 20-10 lead and sailed to the 25-17 victory with a kill from Candelaria.

The Pioneers took their only victory in the third set. After playing to a 9-9 tie, C.W. Post took the lead and led by as many as six, 20-14. With a 24-20 lead, the Pioneers added a kill to seal the third set victory.

The fourth set, was highly competitive, with the teams exchanging points for most of the set. Neither team led by more than one point, until the Chargers took the victory. The Pioneers tied the set at 23-23 before the Chargers tallied back-to-back points and the 25-23 victory.

As a team, the Chargers hit at a .233 hitting percentage. The Chargers also led 48-38 in total kills, while the Pioneers led in team blocks.

The Chargers will return to action on Tuesday, September 21 when they travel to Queens College for another non-conference match. Match time is set for 7 p.m. in Flushing, N.Y.
