Volleyball Swings Past Knights in Non-Conference Match

FLUSHING, N.Y. - The University of New Haven women's volleyball team defeated Queens College 3-1 (25-20, 25-18, 24-26, 25-18) Tuesday night in New York. New Haven improves to 7-1 on the season, while the Knights fall to 2-5.

Leading the way for the Chargers offense was senior outside hitter Sara Malmlov (Lindesberg, Sweden/Sheridan College). She recorded nine kills and three aces in the win. Elizabeth Akinbiyi (Miami Gardens, Fla./Chaminade-Madonna Prep.) added seven kills and seven total blocks, while Tymika Duncan (Trinidad, West Indies/St. Joseph’s Convent ) recorded six kills and four blocks. Setter Chelsey Alpough (Torrance, Calif./South / Western New Mexico Univ. ) paced the team with a .833 hitting percentage on 5-of-6 from the net with no errors.

Alpough also handed out 21 assists and grabbed 10 digs. Libero Heather Ladao (West Covina, Calif./Rowland ) led the defense with 25 digs and a match-high seven service aces, while Malmlov added 14 digs as well.

New Haven returns to action in its first conference match of the season on Thursday, September 23 when they travel to Pace University. Game time in Pleasantville, N.Y. is set for 7 p.m.
