Women’s Volleyball knocks Off Saint Rose in Four Sets, 3-1

Box Score

WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The University of New Haven women’s volleyball team extended its current winning streak to seven games with a 3-1 victory over Northeast-10 Conference foe, Saint Rose, on Saturday afternoon at Chargers Gymnasium. Sara Malmlov (Lindesberg, Sweden/Sheridan College) led the attack for the second straight game, improving UNH to 4-0 all-time against the Golden Knights.

With the win, the Chargers improved to 9-1 overall on the season and a perfect 2-0 in the NE-10. Saint Rose dropped to 3-9 overall, 1-1 in the league.

Game one of the contest featured a back and forth battle that would go several points past the 25 point mark. Unfortunately for the home team, the Golden Knights used a kill from Kayleigh Quinn and a Charger error to take the first set, 29-27.

However after the shaky start, New Haven bounced back quickly in the second game, racing out to a 19-11 advantage. The Chargers collected 14 kills and six errors on 37 total attempts leading to a 25-21 win, knotting up the series at 1-1.

Game three featured a close match through the first 10 points, but was eventually controlled by UNH. Behind the hot serving hand of Malmlov, New Haven garnered nine consecutive points to take a commanding 18-11 lead. Chelsey Alpough (Torrance, Calif./South / Western New Mexico Univ. ) concluded the Chargers’ second win of the day with a kill to conclude a 25-21 triumph.

Saint Rose would not go down quietly in this one, jumping out to a 6-3 lead in game four. After the two squads went back and forth, New Haven finally grasped the lead at 14-13 and never looked back. With match-point on the line, Tymika Duncan (Trinidad, West Indies/St. Joseph’s Convent ) solidified the victory with a kill on a pass from Alpough.

Sara Malmlov led the way recording 20 plus kills for the second consecutive game. She had 22 of them and eight errors on 55 total attempts, coupled with nine digs and three aces. Elizabeth Akinbiyi (Miami Gardens, Fla./Chaminade-Madonna Prep.) also fared well with 13 kills and five errors on 26 attempts, while Heather Ladao (West Covina, Calif./Rowland ) compiled 19 digs. Alpough registered a game-high 39 assists, 11 digs and three kills.

The Chargers return to the court on Wednesday, September 29 with an away game at Assumption College. Game time is set for 7 p.m. The Chargers then come home to host the Ravens of Franklin Pierce on Friday night.
