SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - The University of New Haven women's volleyball team defeated American International College 3-1 (25-19, 20-25, 25-17, 25-19) Tuesday night in its 17th straight victory of the season. With the win, New Haven improved to 17-4 overall and 12-0 in the Northeast-10 Conference. The Yellow Jackets dropped to 13-14 overall and 8-4 in conference play.
In the first set, the Chargers and Yellow Jackets played point-for-point through the first 14 points, drawing even at 7-7 in the early going. UNH then went on a 3-0 run to take a 10-7 lead, a lead they didn’t relinquish for the remainder of the set. UNH held on to its lead and led by as many as six after a
Kristy Atufunwa (Denver, Colo./Denver East) and
Chelsey Alpough (Torrance, Calif./South / Western New Mexico Univ. ) block, giving the Chargers a 23-17 lead. An AIC service error gave the Chargers a 25-19 win in the opening set.
The Yellow Jackets took set two, after opening a 3-0 lead right from the start. AIC led early in the second set and never stopped. The Yellow Jackets opened a seven point, 9-2 lead early. UNH then went on a 7-2 run to cut the AIC lead to 11-9. AIC continued to lead throughout the second set and sealed a 25-20 victory to even the match at one set each.
After struggling in the early portion of the third set, UNH responded midway through the set with a 5-0 run, sparked by a kill from
Keidy Candelaria (Vega Baja, Puerto Rico/Bayamon Military Academy), which gave the Chargers a 14-11 lead. New Haven continued to lead and led by as many as seven, 20-13. UNH continued to lead throughout the set as AIC closed the grab, but an AIC error seal the set for the Chargers who took a 25-17 victory in the third set.
The Chargers opened a 4-0 lead to kickoff the fourth set.
Margo Meteyer (Madison, Wis./Madison West) and
Amber Cannady (Yonkers, N.Y./Charles E. Gorton) each recorded a pair of kills in the opening point of the set. New Haven led throughout the set and held a 20-18 lead after the Yellow Jackets closed the gap later in the set.
Kaulana Ane (Paia, Hawai'i/Kamehameha), Meteyer and Cannady each recorded kills in the closing points to give the Chargers a 25-19 fourth set win.
Candelaria led the Chargers with 13 kills, while Cannady led the team with a .304 hitting percentage off nine kills and two errors off 23 attempts. Candelaria added a team-high four aces and 20 digs. Meteyer added eight kills with three errors off 19 attempts, .263 hitting percentage. Alpough handed out 37 assists, while
Heather Ladao (West Covina, Calif./Rowland ) led the team with 24 digs. Atufunwa led the team with five total blocks in the win.
