Volleyball Wins 10th Straight, Sweeps Bridgeport

BOX SCORE

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. - The University of New Haven women's volleyball team swept the University of Bridgeport, 3-0 (25-23,25-19,25-21), Thursday night. With the win, the Chargers improved to 10-4 on the season and won their 10th straight match. The Purple Knights fell to 8-3 on the season and dropped their second match to the Chargers this season.

In the opening set, New Haven fell behind early. The Chargers trailed by four, 8-4, early, but rebounded and evened the score at 13-13. After a Purple Knight ace, Bridgeport led 18-17 later in the set. The teams then played point-for-point through the remainder of the set. Two Keidy Candelaria (Vega Baja, Puerto Rico/Bayamon Military Academy) kills gave UNH a 22-21 and a 23-22 lead, but Bridgeport errors down the stretch gave the Chargers a 1-0 advantage in the match.

The second set was a tale of offensive rallies. UNH opened with a 4-0 run, while the Purple Knights kept the score within five points in the ensuing rallies. New Haven held a 15-13 later in the set, but five unaswered points put the Chargers behind by three. Sparked by three-straight attack errors on Bridgeport, the Chargers evened the score and eventually took a 21-18 lead at the end of a 6-0 run. The Chargers finished out the set and Candelaria capped the win with a 25th-point ace.

In the final set, Bridgeport and New Haven played even to 7-7. Three-straight UNH points gave the Chargers a 10-7 lead. The Purple Knights then rallied and evened the score again at 10-10. The teams played very even for a majority of the set and were again tied at 18-18 late. UNH then scored seven of the final 10 points to take a 25-21 win and sweep. Candelaria and Chelsey Alpough (Torrance, Calif./South / Western New Mexico Univ. ) recorded a pair of kills to seal the win for UNH.

Candelaria led the Chargers with 12 kills and added 11 digs for the double-double. Kristy Atufunwa (Denver, Colo./Denver East) led the team with a .467 hitting percentage off nine kills, two errors and 15 attempts. She added five total blocks, while Amber Cannady (Yonkers, N.Y./Charles E. Gorton) led the team with seven total blocks. Kaulana Ane (Paia, Hawai'i/Kamehameha) was first on the team with 13 digs and added six blocks. Alpough handed out 30 assists in the win as well.
