Chargers Win 13th Straight with Sweep of Saint Rose

BOX SCORE WEST HAVEN, Conn. – A total team effort led the University of New Haven women’s volleyball team to a sweep of visiting Saint Rose on Tuesday evening at Charger Gym. The 3-0 victory – by set scores of 25-17, 25-12 and 25-16 – runs the Chargers’ winning streak to 13.
 
With the win, New Haven improves to 16-1 overall and 8-0 in Northeast-10 action. Saint Rose falls to 9-8 on the season with a 2-3 conference tally.
 
Kristy Atufunwa (Denver, Colo./Denver East) led the attack with eight kills. Keidy Candelaria (Vega Baja, Puerto Rico/Bayamon Military Academy) added seven finishers, Kristen Lee (Colorado Springs, Colo./Liberty) notched five, Amber Cannady (Yonkers, N.Y./Charles E. Gorton) had four and Damianis Eusebio (Miramar, Fla./University School) posted two. As a unit, the Chargers hit .282 (32-10-78).
 
Running offense was Kaulana Ane (Paia, Hawai'i/Kamehameha), who doled out 25 assists. The New Haven setter filled out her statline with six kills on seven errorless swings (.857), seven digs, six blocks and three service aces. Earlier today, Ane was named the Northeast-10 Setter of the Week for the second consecutive week.
 
Kea-Marie Olaso (Kailua, Hawai'i/Le Jardin Academy) helmed the back row with 13 digs. Candelaria added seven from the back row and Lee registered six. At the net, Cannady had a hand in nine of the Chargers’ 11 blocks.
 
New Haven also compiled 11 points off of aces, led by four from Candelaria.
 
The Golden Knights got a team-high five kills from Alex Gagliano. Ariana Wilson had a team-best nine assists and Katy Daniels led the back row with nine digs.
 
The Chargers led wire-to-wire in set one and never looked back from a 2-1 lead in set two. Set three was the most competitive frame, with Saint Rose leading as late as 11-10 before New Haven polished off the set on a 15-5 run to cap the home sweep.
 
New Haven wraps up its three-match homestand against perennial regional power Dowling on Oct. 19. First serve is set for 7 p.m. and will be broadcast live on NewHavenChargers.com.
