Chargers Win Fourth Straight, Sweep Saint Anselm

BOX SCORE WEST HAVEN, Conn. – A .365 hitting performance led the University of New Haven women’s volleyball team to a sweep of visiting Saint Anselm on Tuesday evening at Charger Gymnasium. Keidy Candelaria (Vega Baja, Puerto Rico/Bayamon Military Academy) and Amber Cannady (Yonkers, N.Y./Charles E. Gorton) headed the effort with 15 and 11 kills, respectively.
 
With their fourth-straight win, the Chargers improve to 7-1 overall and 2-0 in the Northeast-10. The Hawks drop to an even 5-5 on the season and 1-1 in conference action.
 
Candelaria’s 15 kills came on 27 swings for a .370 (15-2-27) hitting percentage. Cannady posted a .529 (11-2-17) attack percentage, and Kristen Lee (Colorado Springs, Colo./Liberty) had an efficient six kills on nine errorless swings for a .667 rate. Overall the Chargers had 44 kills and 13 errors on 85 attempts for a .365 hitting percentage.
 
Kristy Atufunwa (Denver, Colo./Denver East) added five kills for New Haven, Ashley Dalton (Helena, Mont./Capital / Northern Arizona University) and Damianis Eusebio (Miramar, Fla./University School) each had two and Hayley Wilson (Denver, Colo./Overland) added one finisher. Kaulana Ane had two from the setter spot in addition to 37 assists.
 
Defensively, Wilson led a balanced effort with 10 digs, and Kea-Marie Olaso (Kailua, Hawai'i/Le Jardin Academy) chipped in with nine. At the net, Cannady and Dalton each had a hand in two of New Haven’s four blocks. Margo Meteyer (Madison, Wis./Madison West) landed four of the Chargers’ six aces, with Ane and Wilson each dropping in a winner as well.
 
The Chargers were dominant in the opening two sets, posting hitting percentages of .517 (16-1-29) and .526 (12-2-19) en route to wins by scores of 25-14 and 25-10. The Hawks had their best showing in the third frame, but New Haven held off the visitors to take a 25-23 decision and seal the 3-0 sweep.
 
Vivian Fitzgerald led Saint Anselm with five kills as the Hawks combined to hit .066 (22-16-91). Natalie Steinwart dished out 17 assists for the Hawks, and Margaret Tereschuk led all players with 15 digs.
 
The Chargers resume non-conference play on Friday, Sept. 28 with a 7 p.m. outing at Dowling – the No. 2 seed in last season’s NCAA East Region Championship. A three-match homestand begins Saturday at Charger Gym with a 1 p.m. visit from Franklin Pierce. New Haven then hosts Southern Connecticut State on Oct. 2 and closes the stretch on Oct. 5 against LIU Post.
