WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The University of New Haven men's soccer team dropped a 3-0 decision to the visiting College of Saint Rose on Tuesday afternoon. The match on Kayo Field was the Chargers' 2013 Northeast-10 Conference opener.
With the loss, New Haven falls to 0-4-1 on the season. The Golden Knights improve to 3-2-0 and even their NE-10 mark at 1-1-0.
The Chargers led the visitors in shots, 21-14, and held a 10-0 advantage in corner kicks. However, the Saint Rose back line and a duo of goalkeepers kept New Haven off the board for the third-consecutive match.
James Pyatsky (Stewart Manor, N.Y./Garden City) made five saves in goal over the first 88:28, with Jason Smith (Gales Ferry, Conn./Ledyard) helming the net for the final 1:32 of action. Gui Dos Santos (Curitiba, Brazil/Bethel (Conn.)) took two of New Haven's seven shots on target.
Juan Garzon started the scoring for the Golden Knights in the 23rd minute on an unassisted marker, and Uros Antic buried a rebound less than five minutes later to stake Saint Rose to a 2-0 advantage that it would take into the intermission.
New Haven came out firing, earning eight corner kicks and putting six shots on goal against Colan Balkwell in the second half. However, the sophomore keeper turned away each of the six chances, and Jacob Sand added an 82nd-minute insurance tally to run the score to its final of 3-0.
Christian Esposito stopped the one shot he faced in the first half to earn the victory in goal for Saint Rose.
New Haven returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 21 for a 1 p.m. visit from Southern New Hampshire. The match with the Penmen will be broadcast live in high definition on NewHavenChargers.com.
