Women's Tennis Begins Home Schedule With Dominating Victory over Dowling, 8-1

WOODBRIDGE, Conn. - Led by a sweep in doubles and three players with wins in both singles and doubles, the University of New Haven women's tennis team cruised to an 8-1 victory over Dowling College Friday afternoon in its 2013 home opener. Samantha Nigri (Carmel, N.Y./Carmel), Alexandra Sharshakov (Reisterstown, Md./Garrison Forest) and Sarah Burzin (Ivoryton, Conn./Valley Regional) each won their singles and doubles matches to lead the Chargers in their second-straight win to open the 2013 fall schedule.

The Chargers moved to 2-0 overall, while the Golden Lions dropped to 0-4 on the season.

Lindsey Conley (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury ) and Nigri teams in No. 1 doubles in what proved to be the closest contest of the afternoon. The pair defeated Robin Romanoff and Ilknov Erem 8-6. Jessica MacPhee and Sharshakov paired in No. 2 doubles for a perfect 8-0 victory, while Sharshakov won her No. 2 singles match against Erem as well (6-0, 6-0). In No. 3 doubles, Nan Sirihorachai (Plainsboro, N.J./West Windsor-Plainsboro North) teamed with Burzin for another 8-0 victory. Burzin defeated Kaitlin Ellingsworth 6-0, 6-0 in No. 5 singles as well.

Martha Petzoldt (Westfield, Vt./North Country Union) won her No. 4 singles match 6-4, 6-1 and Christina Santos (Wolcott, Conn./Wolcott) rounded out the Chargers' victories with a 6-0, 6-0 victory in No. 6 singles.

With their best start since 2007, New Haven hopes to continue its unbeaten streak to open the season at Le Moyne on Sunday, Sept. 29. Match time in Syracuse, N.Y. is set for 12 p.m.
