NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – An 80th-minute goal from Douglas Searl was the only scoring as the University of New Haven men's soccer team fell at nationally-ranked No. 22 Merrimack, 1-0, on Saturday evening.
Marc Scelsa (Islip, N.Y./Islip) made 10 saves for the Chargers.
Â
After the loss, New Haven stands at 2-11 on the season with a 1-8 Northeast-10 mark. The Warriors improve to 9-2-2 overall and 5-2-2 in conference play.
Â
Scelsa's 10 saves mark a new career standard. The freshman keeper held the stalemate for over 79 minutes before Searl headed home a Ryan Miller free kick to stake the hosts to a 1-0 advantage.
Â
Louis Greenway Tambini (Nottingham, England/Trinity School) fired the only shot on goal for the Chargers in the match. He also created a turnover in the second half and beat two-time Northeast-10 Conference Goalkeeper of the Year Jose Silva, but his attempt on goal rolled just wide to keep New Haven off the board.
Â
Silva made one save to post his fourth shutout of the fall.

The Chargers return to the pitch on Wednesday, Oct. 22 at 7 p.m. at another nationally-ranked foe – crosstown and NE-10 rival No. 7 Southern Connecticut State. Action resumes on Kayo Field on Saturday, Oct. 25 at 7 p.m. under the lights against Franklin Pierce as a part of Homecoming Weekend.
