BRIARCLIFF, N.Y. – The University of New Haven women's soccer team was on the short side of a 3-1 result on Tuesday afternoon at Northeast-10 foe Pace.
Marisa Garcia (Babylon, N.Y./West Babylon) scored the Chargers' goal in the road contest.
After the loss, New Haven stands at 6-8-1 on the season with a 5-6-1 NE-10 mark. The Setters improve to 8-7-0 overall and 6-5-0 in conference play.
Â
Garcia's goal opened the scoring in the 10th minute. The junior delivered her second goal of the fall on a free kick from 25 yards out to stake the Chargers to a 1-0 advantage. The 2013 All-Northeast-10 performer has now scored eight career goals with 28 total points for the Blue and Gold.
Â
The Setters tied the match in the 37th minute. After a New Haven handball whistled in the box, Jillian Ferro converted a penalty kick to knot the score at 1-1.
Â
After the intermission, Ferro struck again with the marker that would stand up as the game-winner. She headed home a Drew Ribadeneyra corner kick in the 57th minute to give Pace a 2-1 advantage.
Â
The Setters rounded out the scoring at 3-1 with an insurance tally as Alyssa Zeoli collected a through-ball from Ferro and buried it in the 81st minute.
Â
Natasha Purchla (Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot) went the distance in goal and made two saves for the Chargers. Lauren DeSousa started between the posts for Pace and made four saves. Aisha Chauhan stopped all three shots that she faced in the second half to earn the win for the Setters.
Â
The Chargers now begin an eight-day hiatus from competition. New Haven returns to the pitch on Wednesday, Oct. 29 when nationally-ranked Saint Rose visits Kayo Field for a 4 p.m. contest. The Blue and Gold will then wrap up the regular season on Saturday, Nov. 1 at home against Southern New Hampshire.
