Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

No. 6 Saint Rose Tops Chargers, 5-1

WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The University of New Haven women's soccer team was on the short side of a 5-1 result to No. 6 nationally-ranked Saint Rose on Wednesday afternoon on Kayo Field. Marisa Garcia (Babylon, N.Y./West Babylon) had the Chargers' goal, assisted by Alexa Seidenfeld (West Orange, N.J./West Orange) and Miranda Smith (Magnolia, Del./Camden).

With the loss, the Chargers fall to 6-9-1 on the season with a 5-7-1 Northeast-10 mark. The defeat also eliminates New Haven from contention for a third consecutive berth in the NE-10 postseason. Saint Rose improves to 14-1-2 this fall and 10-1-2 in conference play.

Garcia's goal came in the 88th minute. Smith started the sequence, moving the ball into the box where Seidenfeld found Garcia. The junior finished past a diving goalkeeper to notch her third goal of the season. The assists were the first of the campaign for both Smith and Seidenfeld.

Carmilla Puopolo started the scoring for Saint Rose. The 2011 NSCAA National Player of the Year converted in both the 27th and 37th minutes to stake the Golden Knights to the 2-0 lead that they would carry into the intermission.

Saint Rose added two late goals on a Gianna Smith marker and Sammy Blizzard goal in the 75th and 78th minutes. After Garcia's tally, Raven Small finished off a goal with just 4.6 seconds remaining to cap the scoring at 5-1.

Natasha Purchla (Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot) made 12 saves for the Chargers. Ashley Homer turned away three shots for the Golden Knights.

New Haven will conclude its 2014 campaign on Saturday, Nov. 1 with Senior Day on Kayo Field. The 1 p.m. contest against Southern New Hampshire will be preceded by a ceremony honoring the Chargers' class of graduating seniors.
