Chargers Roll Past Merrimack, 42-14, on Homecoming Weekend

WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The University of New Haven football team scored touchdowns on its first four drives and never looked back en route to a 42-14 win over visiting Merrimack on Saturday afternoon. The Chargers picked up their fifth consecutive victory before a Homecoming crowd of 4,358 at Ralph F. DellaCamera Stadium.

With the Northeast-10 triumph, New Haven improves to 5-3 overall and 5-2 in conference play. The Warriors drop to 3-5 on the season with a 3-4 NE-10 mark.

Quarterback Joey Bradley (Issaquah, Wash./Issaquah / University of North Dakota) led the Chargers' offensively with 268 yards passing and two touchdowns as a part of an 18-for-22 performance. He also scrambled for a 21-yard score to highlight his three carries for 42 yards.

Bradley spread the ball around to six different receivers, including four receptions apiece for Henry Adegunle (Rockaway, N.Y./Channel View), Ty Headen (Newark, N.J./American History) and Rishawn Harris (Springfield, Mass./Putnam Vocational Technical Academy). Adegunle and Headen both reeled in touchdowns for the Chargers. Courtney Moshood (Miami, Fla./Miami Palmetto) grabbed three balls for 89 yards, Brandon Fowler (Prospect, Conn./Woodland Regional / Connecticut) had two catches for 12 yards and Andre Anderson (New Haven, Conn./James Hillhouse) caught one pass for three yards.

Anderson led the effort on the ground with a game-best 92 rushing yards. The vast majority came on an 88-yard touchdown rumble to the house in the first quarter. Lemar Thomas (Hackensack, N.J./Hackensack) and Trevor Officer (Monroe, N.Y./Monroe-Woodbury) each added a rushing score for the Blue and Gold.

The Chargers' defensive unit posted its most dominant effort of the season against the traditionally high-powered Merrimack offense. New Haven racked up a season-high nine sacks – the most for the Chargers since picking up nine sacks in a 53-10 win over Millersville on Sept. 20, 1997 en route to an appearance in the NCAA Division II National Championship Game.

Leading the defensive effort was Tyler Condit (Caldwell, N.J./James Caldwell), who made a career-best 16 tackles. His tackling output was the most by a Charger since Steve Cedor racked up 19 stops at Youngstown State on Oct. 24, 1998. Condit made 1.5 tackles-for-loss, including a half-sack.

Michael Intrieri (Westerly, R.I./Westerly / Dean College) had a career-best three sacks in the outing, with Drake Harris (Union, N.J./Union) posting 2.5 sacks. Matt Zakrzewski (Traverse City, Mich./Saint Francis / Indiana) had 12 total tackles, including a sack, and Matthew Rossi (Wyckoff, N.J./Ramapo) and Chad Woodfine (Springfield, Mass./Chicopee / Suffield Academy) each picked up a sack.

In the secondary, Mark Clements (Mays Landing, N.J./Oakcrest / Worcester Academy) made eight tackles with a pass breakup, and Herbens Antenor (Malden, Mass./Malden) had six stops.

Collectively, the New Haven defense limited Merrimack to just 33 rushing yards. Warriors' freshman quarterback Joe Capobianco led his club with a 35-for-44 passing day totaling 270 yards and a touchdown.

Punter Anthony Greenfield (Bloomfield, N.J./Paramus Catholic / Wagner) did his job in reversing the field position with an average of 43.3 yards per punt. He boomed three punts on the day, all clearing 40 yards with Merrimack gaining zero punt return yards on two attempts (and one fair catch). Carlos Lozada (New London, Conn./New London) raced down field and made the stop on both punt returns to keep the Warriors' returners at bay.

After picking up sacks on second and third down to stifle Merrimack's opening drive, the Chargers marched to paydirt on their first possession for the afternoon. Bradlley was 5-for-6 for 48 yards on the drive, capped by a four-yard touchdown strike to Headen. Brian Roberts (Amherst, N.Y./Amherst Central) added his first of six extra points to stake the Blue and Gold to an early 7-0 lead.

Merrimack responded with its only score of the first 57-plus minutes of action. The 11-play, 87-yard drive was completed by a two-yard touchdown run for Adriell Mayes followed by a Nick Zwaan extra point.

However, the 7-7 deadlock lasted just 23 seconds. New Haven begin its ensuing drive on the 12-yard line and, on the first play from scrimmage, Anderson raced 88 yards to the house to score his team-leading eighth touchdown of the fall.

After forcing a punt, the Chargers went right back to work on offense at the beginning of the second quarter. Bradley connected with Moshood for 65 yards – the Chargers' longest completion of the season – on third-and-10 to set New Haven up at the one-yard line. On the next snap, Thomas plunged into the endzone from one-yard out to run the lead to 21-7.

A 19-yard punt by Merrimack stake the Chargers to short field just two minutes later. New Haven needed just four plays to get back on the scoreboard, as Adegunle took a screen pass and – aided by a caravan of blockers – dashed 42 yards into the endzone for a touchdown. The Roberts' PAT ran the advantage to 28-7 midway through the second quarter.

Merrimack would then embark on a drive that spanned more than six minutes of game time. The Warriors reached the New Haven 36-yard line, but Zakrzewski and Harris teamed up for a fourth-down sack – the Chargers' eighth of the opening half – to squelch the scoring threat and maintain the 21-point lead entering the intermission.

The Chargers scored on their first four drives of the half, only breaking the streak with a kneel down to bring the period to a close. That Bradley kneel-down was also New Haven's only failed third-down conversion in the opening 30 minutes after a 5-for-5 showing on third down.

Both clubs went three-and-out to begin the third quarter before the Chargers embarked on their next scoring drive. After 11-yard gains from Harris and Adegunle through the air, a 35-yard hookup from Bradley to Adegunle on third-and-20 kept the drive alive and moved it into the redzone. Three plays later, Officer scampered across the goal line from four yards out to extend the lead to 35-7. In total, the drive spanned 76 yards over 10 plays and 5:43 of clock.

New Haven's next drive – the Chargers' first possession of the fourth quarter – saw the Blue and Gold break the 40-point plateau for the first time this fall. Bradley passed for 28 yards on the march and ran for 28 more, including a career-long 21-yard scramble for a touchdown, as the Chargers took a 42-7 advantage.

The Warriors added a late touchdown on an 11-yard hookup from Capobianco to Jere Brown with 2:17 to go before the Chargers ran out the clock on a 42-14 triumph.

In addition to season bests in points scored (42), rushing yards allowed (33) and sacks (9.0), the Chargers had season-high performances in rushing touchdowns (4), yards per pass (12.2) and yards per play (8.2).

New Haven continues Northeast-10 play on Saturday, Nov. 1 with a trip to Pace for a noon kickoff at Anne M. Dorner Middle School in Ossining, N.Y. The final regular-season contest of 2014 is set for Saturday, Nov. 8 at DellaCamera Stadium as the Chargers host Saint Anselm at noon.
