Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Late Surge Falls Short for Men’s Soccer Against Franklin Pierce

WEST HAVEN, Conn. – A penalty kick goal from Rob Poirier (Old Lyme, Conn./Lyme-Old Lyme) cut the deficit in the half, but the University of New Haven men's soccer team was unable to complete the comeback in Saturday's 2-1 loss to visiting Franklin Pierce on Kayo Field. Poirier's marker was his third of the fall.

With their 10th one-goal loss of the fall, the Chargers now stand at 2-13-0 overall and 1-10-0 in the Northeast-10. The Ravens improve to 8-5-1 on the season with a 6-4-1 conference mark.

Marc Scelsa (Islip, N.Y./Islip) and James Pyatsky (Stewart Manor, N.Y./Garden City) each spent a half between the posts and allowed one goal apiece. Scelsa made one save, and Pyatsky turned away a pair of Franklin Pierce offerings.

The Ravens started the scoring in the 19th minute. David Magee collected a long ball outside the box, beat a defender and the then scored in the lower far corner of the box. His first goal of the fall staked the visitors to a 1-0 advantage that they would carry into the intermission.

Franklin Pierce added an insurance tally in the 80th minute on a Lorris Cotijo goal. Cortijo dribbled down the middle of the pitch and blasted from 30 yards out past Pyatsky to run the score to 2-0.

In the midst of a late-match charge, New Haven got on the board in the 89th minute. A takedown in the box led to a penalty kick, which Poirier converted to pull the Chargers to within one goal. Poirier would have a chance at a late equalizer with 27 seconds to go, but the Ravens' Jordan LeGuyader made the last of his three saves to preserve the 2-1 result.

The Chargers will wrap-up the 2014 home slate on Tuesday, Oct. 28 with a 3:30 p.m. visit from Assumption. New Haven men's soccer will celebrate Senior Day prior to the NE-10 clash with the Greyhounds.
