Chargers Edged at Saint Michael’s in Overtime, 4-3

COLCHESTER, Vt. - Rob Poirier (Old Lyme, Conn./Lyme-Old Lyme) scored the equalizer with 29 seconds remaining to send the University of New Haven men's soccer team into overtime at Saint Michael's on Saturday. However, it was the host Purple Knights who netted the golden goal to come away with a 4-3 decision.

After the loss, the Chargers fall to 2-7-0 overall and 1-4-0 in Northeast-10 play. Saint Michael's improves to 6-4-0 on the season with a 2-4-0 conference mark.

Andres Torres (Medellín, Colombia/Norwalk (Conn.) / Adelphi University) and Oscar Johannesson (Hässleholm, Sweden/Hässleholms Tekniska Skola) also netted goals for New Haven, with assists going to Sal DiTommaso (Farmington, Conn./Farmington / Central Connecticut State University) and Ryan Fleming (Woodbridge, Va./Woodbridge). Marc Scelsa (Islip, N.Y./Islip) made five saves between the posts.

Torres started the scoring with only marker of the first half. The senior forward netted his team-leading fifth goal of 2014 in the 29th minute, taking a DiTommaso through-ball and beating Saint Michael's keeper Nicco Roque to stake the Chargers to a 1-0 lead. DiTommaso's assist was his second of the fall.

After the break, the Chargers extended the margin to 2-0 in the 59th minute as Johannesson tapped in a short cross from Fleming. The scoring play marked the first goal and first assist, respectively, for Johannesson and Fleming.

Saint Michael's got on the board just over four minutes later as a free kick was redirected by Colby Ajoku for a goal.

With under five minutes to go, the Purple Knights would score twice in a span of 78 seconds to take their first lead of the afternoon. First, Simon Rodriguez corralled a loose ball and buried the equalizer in the 86th minute. Josh Vlasich then added a header into the upper right corner to put the hosts on top, 3-2.

In the match's 90th minute, the Chargers earned an opportunity for the equalizer via a free kick. Poirier did the honors and sent the orb into the back of the net to send the contest into overtime.

Less than three minutes into the extra session, the Purple Knights were awarded a penalty kick. James Pyatsky (Stewart Manor, N.Y./Garden City) made the initial save on Aaron DaCosta's try, but Rodriguez put the rebound through to tally the golden goal for Saint Michael's in a 4-3 final.

The Chargers now begin a three-match homestand as Le Moyne comes to Kayo Field on Wednesday, Oct. 8. New Haven then hosts Stonehill and Adelphi to wrap-up the residency on campus.
