Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Chargers Down Merrimack, 2-1, on Rain-Soaked Kayo Field

WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The University of New Haven women's soccer team defeated the Warriors of Merrimack College, 2-1, on a rainy Saturday afternoon on Kayo Field. Shannon Enright (Ashford, Conn./E.O. Smith) led the way for the Chargers with a goal and an assist, with Amber Simms (Southport, England/Southport) netted the game-winner.

In a rematch of last November's Northeast-10 Championship Quarterfinal, the Chargers once again emerged victorious to improve to 4-6-0 overall and 3-4-0 in conference play. Merrimack falls to 5-3-1 on the season with a 2-3-1 NE-10 mark.

Natasha Purchla (Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot) went the distance in goal for New Haven, making five stops to pick up the victory.

Enright started the scoring in the 22nd minute. The Warriors' defense gave the sophomore room to dribble from midfield to 35 yards out, where she blasted the ball into the top-right corner to stake the Chargers to a 1-0 lead. The marker was Enright's second goal of the fall.

Merrimack netted the equalizer just 2:13 later. Purchla made the initial save on a free kick from Jenna Savi, but Briana Giacalone followed and buried the rebound to knot the contest at 1-1.

The final goal of the afternoon also came in the first half as Enright connected with Simms in the box. The All-America forward found the lower right of the net to score her team-leading fifth goal of the season and the 26th of her four-year career. Enright's assist was her first of the fall.

In addition to Purchla's five stops, Marisa Garcia (Babylon, N.Y./West Babylon) earned a defensive save, clearing out a Savi corner kick bending toward the Chargers' goal.

Meghan Gulbrandsen started in the goal and took the loss for the Warriors, recording four saves. Molly Meehan took over goalkeeping duties after the intermission and stopped both shots on target that she faced.

The Chargers remain at home this Tuesday, Oct. 7 to host crosstown and NE-10 rival Southern Connecticut State at 4 p.m.
