Women's Volleyball Falls to Saint Anselm on Senior Day

WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The University of New Haven women's volleyball team was on the short side of a 3-1 decision to visiting Saint Anselm on Saturday afternoon after Charger Gymnasium. Kristen Lee (Colorado Springs, Colo./Liberty) and Margo Meteyer (Madison, Wis./Madison West) both recorded double-doubles for the Chargers.
 
The loss ends a five-match losing streak for the Chargers, who now stand at 19-6 overall and 10-2 in the Northeast-10 Conference. Saint Anselm improves to 12-11 with a 4-7 conference mark. The Hawks took the match by set scores of 28-26, 21-25, 25-22 and 25-23.
 
Lee paced the New Haven offense with 18 kills on 40 errorless swings to post a .450 hitting percentage and rounded out her double-double with 15 digs.  Meteyer added 16 kills to go along with 19 digs.
 
Kristy Atufunwa (Denver, Colo./Denver East) had 10 kills from the middle for New Haven, which hit at a collective .203 clip. Hayley Wilson (Denver, Colo./Overland) had five kills, while Ashley Dalton (Helena, Mont./Capital / Northern Arizona University) and Meghan Kennelly (Detroit, Mich./Eisenhower) notched one finisher apiece. Kaulana Ane (Paia, Hawai'i/Kamehameha) added four kills from the setter spot in addition to 43 assists.
 
Kea-Marie Olaso (Kailua, Hawai'i/Le Jardin Academy) had a team-leading 20 digs to pace the effort in the back row. Ane neared a double-double with nine digs. At the net, Atufunwa had a hand in six of the Chargers' 12 team blocks. Ane and Lexis Peterson (Windsor, N.Y./Windsor Central) each played a part in four New Haven send-backs, while Meteyer and Wilson rejected three apiece. Dalton and Lee supplemented the action up front with two blocks each.
 
Meteyer scored two points from the serving game with a pair of aces, while Ane, Olaso and Lee landed one winner apiece.
 
Saint Anselm was led by a match-high 23 kills from Kathryn Teets. Lauren Oxley added 16 kills for the Hawks, who hit .159 in the winning effort. Natalie Steinwart dished out 51 assists, and Melissa Jewett led all players with 26 digs.
 
The Chargers recognized seniors Ane, Atufunwa, Dalton, Meteyer, Wilson and Ashley Gomez (El Paso, Texas/Ysleta) prior to the match.
 
New Haven wraps up its home schedule on Tuesday, Nov. 4 with a 7 p.m. visit from crosstown and Northeast-10 rival Southern Connecticut State.
