Men's Basketball Falls in Season Opener at Le Moyne

SYRACUSE, N.Y.,- Senior center Cyrus James (Manchester, Conn./Howell Cheney Tech) scored 13 points on 4-of-7 from the field and 5-of-9 from the charity stripe to lead the University of New Haven men's basketball team, but the Chargers fell 62-44 Wednesday night in their opening game of the 2014-15 season. Jemal Mosley (Spring Valley, N.Y./Don Bosco Prep / Putnam Science Academy) added 10 points in the loss.

The Dolphins improved to 3-0 on the season with the win, while UNH dropped its third consecutive season-opener.

New Haven struggled shooting at Ted Grant Court, hitting just 27.8 percent of its attempts (15-54). The Chargers also shot just 46.7 percent from the foul line (7-15) and 25 percent from beyond the arc.

James added eight rebounds and two blocks to his statline in the opener. Mosley's 10 points came off a trio of three-point field goals and a free throw, while the guard added two assist and a steal. Freshman Tommy Hunt (Smithfield, R.I./St. Andrew's) finished the first start of his collegiate career with nine points on 3-of-11 from downtown. The rookie chipped in with three assists and a board as well. Starter Eric Anderson (Newark, N.J./Newark Tech) was held scoreless, but led all players with 11 total rebounds.

Reserves Jonny Ocasio (Queens, N.Y./Charlotte (Fla.) / Hillsborough Community College), Joshua Guddemi (Nottingham, England/Derby) and Levy Gillespie (Meriden, Conn./Capital Preparatory Magnet) combined for eight points and nine rebounds off the bench.

Le Moyne had three players in double-figures. Nate Gause led all scorers in the game with 20 points, while Qwadere Lovell added 18. Connor Mahoney nearly recorded a double-double with 14 points and nine rebounds. Stan Buczek added a team-high 10 rebounds.

The Chargers were out-rebounded by the Dolphins 42-33. UNH also committed more turnovers (12-8) and trailed in points in the paint (24-16).

After a back-and-forth first half, Mahoney gave Le Moyne a 26-23 lead at halftime in Syracuse with a jumper at the 1:11 mark. A pair of New Haven three-point attempts in the final minute fell short and the Dolphins held on to the lead at the break. The score was tied three times and the lead changed hands three different times in the opening stanza.

In the first two minutes of the second half, UNH evened the game at 28-28 with a Mosley free throw. One possession later, James gave the Chargers their first lead of the second half. Le Moyne quickly gained the lead back as part of an 11-2 run to take a 39-32 lead with 14:21 on the clock. The Dolphins' lead continued to grow and eventually their lead grew to 20 points, 58-38, with 2:42 remaining. UNH could not get back in the game and Le Moyne held on for an 18-point victory.

The Chargers return to action on Saturday, Nov. 22 at Pace in another Northeast-10 Southwest Division contest. Top-off in Pleasantville, N.Y. is set for 3:30 p.m.
