Men's Basketball Wins First Game of Season at Pace, 74-56

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. - Led by 18 points and 14 rebounds from Eric Anderson (Newark, N.J./Newark Tech), the University of New Haven men's basketball team defeated Pace 74-56 Saturday afternoon at the Goldstein Fitness Center. The Chargers earned their first win of the 2014-15 season behind a solid performance up and down the box score.

With the win, New Haven improves to 1-1 overall and in the Northeast-10 Conference. The Setters drop to 1-4 overall and 0-2 in conference play.

Anderson connected on 8-of-14 field goals on his way to the game-best 18 points. The senior's double-double included 10 defensive boards and four offensive rebounds, while he came three assists shy of a triple-double in Pleasantville. Three others Chargers also recorded double figure points - Tommy Hunt (Smithfield, R.I./St. Andrew's), Jemal Mosley (Spring Valley, N.Y./Don Bosco Prep / Putnam Science Academy) and Cyrus James (Manchester, Conn./Howell Cheney Tech). Hunt scored 14 with a game-high four three-pointers. James added six rebounds to his 12 points.

Shelton Mickell led Pace with 18 points, while Kyle Pearson scored 16 points.

As a team, New haven shot 53.8 percent from the floor and 41.2 percent from three-point range. UNH out-rebounded the Setters 34-29 and held a 42-22 advantage in points in the paint.

James started Saturday's game with authority as he put down a dunk for the game's first points. The Chargers opened with a 9-2 run and took a seven-point lead. Just over 11 minutes into the first half, James put in a layup and the Blue and Gold took its first 10-point lead of the game, 26-16, with 8:47 on the clock. New Haven held the lead for the remainder of the first half and took a 12-point, 37-25, lead into halftime.

New Haven out-scored the Setters 37-31 in the second half and sealed its first win of the season. The Chargers led by as many as 21 midway through the second half after a traditional three-point-play from James put UNH ahead 61-40. UNH cruised to its first win of the season by converting free throws down the stretch.

The Chargers return to action on Tuesday, Nov. 25 in its home opener at Charger Gymnasium against NE-10 Southwest Division opponent American International. Game time in West Haven is set for 7:30 p.m. against the Yellow Jackets.
