Men's Basketball Falls To AIC In Home Opener

WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The University of New Haven men's basketball team lost a 63-56 decision to American International on Tuesday evening at Charger Gymnasium. The Northeast-10 Conference matchup was the first home game of the season for the Chargers.

New Haven drops to 1-2 overall and 1-2 in the NE-10 with the loss. The Yellow Jackets improve to 4-1 overall and 2-0 in conference play with the win.

Eric Anderson (Newark, N.J./Newark Tech) had a career night for the Chargers with 23 rebounds and came close to breaking a personal record with 25 points. The preseason All-American was the only Charger to break double figures in either category. Anderson added two assists and a steal in a performance that proved to be one of the best in New Haven program history.

Adding nine points, two rebounds and two assists for the Blue and Gold was freshman Levy Gillespie (Meriden, Conn./Capital Preparatory Magnet), while Cyrus James (Manchester, Conn./Howell Cheney Tech) put up seven points, two assists, four rebounds and two blocks. Samir McDaniels (Roxbury, Mass./New Mission) netted six points with four rebounds and an assist.

New Haven jumped out to an impressive start to open the game, growing its lead to 13 points, and finished the first half leading by eight, 33-25. Six three-pointers helped the Chargers as the Yellow Jackets shot 32 percent from the floor in the opening stanza.

The second half proved to be the difference as AIC took the lead early. Cameron Dobbs ended his night 5-of-9 from beyond the arc, netting a total of 21 points. Bobby Harris added 21 of his own and nine rebounds. The Chargers battled down the stretch as the lead changed three times in the second half, but a pair of Bobby Harris free throws with 39 seconds left put the game out of reach.

Coming up, New Haven plays a pair of non-conference games at East Stroudsburg on Sunday, Nov. 30 and at home against Dowling on Wednesday, Dec. 3. Conference play resumes on the road at Adelphi on Saturday, Dec. 6.
