Men's Basketball Defeats No. 15 East Stroudsburg, 79-71

EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. - Eric Anderson (Newark, N.J./Newark Tech) recorded his third consecutive double-double with 23 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Unviersity of New Haven men's basketball team to a 79-71 victory at nationally-ranked No. 15 East Stroudsburg. The Chargers 50.9 percent from the floor and 47.1 percent from three-point territory as they won their first non-conference clash of the season.

With the victory, the Blue and Gold improved to 2-2 overall. The loss drops the Warriors 3-2 on the year and ended a 38-game non-conference winning streak that ESU brought into the contest.

Anderson shot 9-of-18 from the field and made all four of his free throw attempts. He led a group of three Chargers in double figures with the game-high 23 points. Jemal Mosley (Spring Valley, N.Y./Don Bosco Prep / Putnam Science Academy) scored a career-high 17 points, while Cyrus James (Manchester, Conn./Howell Cheney Tech) netted 13 points. Fellow starters Tommy Hunt (Smithfield, R.I./St. Andrew's) and Samir McDaniels (Roxbury, Mass./New Mission) chipped in with nine and six points, respectively.

UNH out rebounded the Warriors 33-27 and shot better from the floor, from downtown and from the charity stripe. The 40 minutes featured an amazing 22 lead changes and 11 ties, while neither team leading by more than eight points.

Jamal Nwaniemeka led ESU with 15 points, while Rasheed Moore added 14 points and nine rebounds. Lamont Tillery rounded out the top scorers with 11 points and sic rebounds.

Anderson scored the game's first points and followed with a three-pointer to give the Chargers a 5-2 lead early. Over the next five minutes, East Stroudsburg went on a 10-0 run to turn its deficit into a seven-point advantage, 12-5, at the 13:19 mark. Three minutes later, Hunt hit back-to-back three pointers for New Haven as the Charger regained the lead with 10:48 remaining in the first half. The lead changed teams seven more times in the final minutes of the first half. Nwaniemeka sunk a trey with 29-seconds left in the first half and evened the score at 34-34 at halftime.

New Haven netted the first points of the second half, but the lead once again changed hands in the first 10 minutes of the second stanza. The Chargers and Warriors went back-and-forth 10 times in the first 10 minutes, with a pair of Matt Tobin free throws eventually evening the game at 55-55 with 9:52 on the clock. East Stroudsburg went ahead by four, 59-55, at the 8:19 mark, but the Chargers responded and held their own four-point lead, 69-65, at the 4:56 mark. Jonny Ocasio (Queens, N.Y./Charlotte (Fla.) / Hillsborough Community College) connected on a layup to give the Chargers the four-point advantage and New Haven held the lead in the final minutes. UNH went 4-for-4 at the foul line in the final two minutes to secure the eight-point victory.

New Haven returns to action on Wednesday, Dec. 3 when it hosts Dowling in its second non-conference game of the season. Game time at Charger Gymnasium is set for 7:30 p.m.
