WEST HAVEN, CONN. -
Eric Anderson (Newark, N.J./Newark Tech) recorded his fourth consecutive double-double while the University of New Haven men's basketball team recorded season-highs in both points and field goal percentage as the Chargers topped the Dowling Golden Lions 80-49 in a non-conference contest on Wednesday night.
New Haven is now 3-2 on the season while Dowling drops to 1-4.
The Chargers also got 12 points from
Jemal Mosley (Spring Valley, N.Y./Don Bosco Prep / Putnam Science Academy) and 10 points and eight rebounds from
Cyrus James (Manchester, Conn./Howell Cheney Tech).
Samir McDaniels (Roxbury, Mass./New Mission) chipped in with eight points on 4-for-4 shooting from the field as part of a 50.0% shooting effort from UNH.
The Chargers jumped on top early as the Blue and Gold hit on seven of their first 11 shots en route to an 18-6 lead less than five minutes in, keyed by a quartet of three-pointers including two by Mosley and a trey each by
Tommy Hunt (Smithfield, R.I./St. Andrew's) and
Levy Gillespie (Meriden, Conn./Capital Preparatory Magnet).
UNH did not let up as the first half progressed, building the lead to 39-18 at halftime. Defense was also a big part of the effort for New Haven, as they held Dowling to just 7-for-30 (23.3%) in the opening stanza including 0-for-12 from beyond the arc.
Two main highlights dotted the second half. The first came with 7:36 remaining when Anderson collected his only block of the night, but one was all he needed to become the first player in program history to reach 200 career blocked shots.
With 5:35 remaining, Johnny Ocasio brought the house down with a thunderous dunk off a drive along the baseline to put New Haven up 66-43. New Haven swelled the lead to as many as 33 in the waning moments before the final buzzer.
The Chargers return to Northeast-10 Conference play this weekend when they will travel to Garden City, N.Y. to take on Adelphi on Saturday at 3:30 pm.
