MANCHESTER, N.H. - Despite a 3-0 loss at Southern New Hampshire on Saturday afternoon, the University of New Haven women's volleyball team clinched the top seed in the upcoming Northeast-10 Conference Championship and a share of its seventh consecutive NE-10 Regular Season Title. The Chargers dropped set scores of 25-19, 25-23 and 25-20.
With the loss, New Haven falls to 20-7 overall and concludes the regular season at 11-3 in the NE-10. The Penmen improve to 17-9 overall and 9-5 in conference play. With the win, SNHU also clinched the sixth or seventh seed in the NE-10 Championship next week, pending the result of tonight's Adelphi/Merrimack match.
The UNH offense was led by a .571 hitting percentage from
Kristy Atufunwa (Denver, Colo./Denver East). The senior middle buried nine swings in 14 attempts with just one error. Atufunwa added five total blocks, including two solo stops.
Kristen Lee (Colorado Springs, Colo./Liberty) registerd 10 kills and
Meghan Kennelly (Detroit, Mich./Eisenhower) chipped in with five kills adding to the Chargers' attack.
Kaulana Ane (Paia, Hawai'i/Kamehameha) handed out 20 assists from her setter position, while
Annika Hacker (Bayreuth, Germany/Littleton (Colo.)) tallied eight helpers.
Kea-Marie Olaso (Kailua, Hawai'i/Le Jardin Academy) led the defense with 18 digs, and Kennelly added 10 from the back row.
The Penmen were led by Marisa Coronis who recorded 14 kills on 16 attempts with only one error for a match-high .812 hitting percentage. Meg Salamun was second on the team with 11 kills, while Nina McGouldrick recorded a double-double consisting of 10 kills and 11 digs. Catherine Cotton managed the offense with 38 assists, and Maeghan Higgins led the back row with 15 digs.
As a team, the Chargers hit at a .205 clip with 38 kills, 15 errors and 112 attempts. The team recorded six blocks and a total of 49 digs.
