ALBANY, N.Y. - The University of New Haven men's basketball team fell 72-70 on a last-second shot at Saint Rose Wednesday night. After an
Eric Anderson (Newark, N.J./Newark Tech) bucket evened the score at 70-70 with 18 ticks left, Jalaun Taylor led the Golden Knights to victory with a second left to play.
With the loss, the Chargers fell to 5-3 overall and 2-3 in NE-10 play. Saint Rose improves to 5-5 overall and 3-3 in the Northeast-10.
Point guard
Jemal Mosley (Spring Valley, N.Y./Don Bosco Prep / Putnam Science Academy) led the Chargers with 22 points, his second 20-point performance in as many games. The sophomore went 8-of-17 from the field and 6-of-12 from three-point range. He also led the team with six assists.
Anderson, who played the last 7:40 with four fouls, finished with 13 points and a team-leading seven rebounds and two blocks. Freshman
Levy Gillespie (Meriden, Conn./Capital Preparatory Magnet) scored a career-best 12 points on 4-of-6 from beyond the arc.
The Chargers shot over 50-percent (53.7) from the floor on 29-of-54. UNH also shot 44.0 percent from three-point territory, but went just 1-for-4 from the charity stripe. New Haven held a 30-27 advantage in rebounding and a 32-26 lead in points in the paint.
New Haven got out to an early lead in the first six minutes at Nolan Gmynasium. Anderson's layup with 14:13 left in the first half, put the Chargers ahead by six, 12-6. The lead proved to be New Haven's largest of the game as Saint Rose went on a 13-4 run to take a three-point lead five minutes later. New Havne regained a narrow lead in the following minutes, but another Golden Knights rally secured a 36-32 lead for the hosts at halftime.
Saint Rose held the lead for the entire second half, except for 1:30 stretch in the middle of the period when the score was knotted at 49-49. Within five points for nearly the entire half, the lead never grow to more than eight points. Trailing 70-64 with 3:36 left, the Chargers rallied in the final minutes to even the score at 70-70 in the final 20 seconds. Saint Rose's game-winner came with one second left.
New Haven returns to action on Friday, Dec. 19 when it hosts Bloomfield in a East Region, non-conference matchup with the Bears. Game time at Charger Gymnasium is set for 7 p.m.
