Chargers Win Shootout at Saint Rose

ALBANY, N.Y. – The University of New Haven women's basketball team placed four players in double figures and got 37 points off the bench as the Chargers won a shootout against the Saint Rose Golden Knights 85-80 in a Northeast-10 Conference tilt on Wednesday evening.

With the win, New Haven improves to 7-2 on the season and moves to 3-2 in the NE-10. Saint Rose drops to 3-6 overall, 1-5 in conference play.

Bria Moore (West Haven, Conn./Hill Regional Career) and Elizabeth Cruso (Westerly, R.I./Westerly) led the way for the Blue and Gold with 17 points apiece. Aquillin Hayes (Harlem, N.Y./Wings Academy) notched her sixth double-double of the season behind 15 points and 12 rebounds while also contributing two blocks. Lauren Hebert (North Reading, Mass./North Reading) turned in a good all-around effort with 15 points, eight rebounds, six of them on the offensive end, and five assists.

The two teams battled tough early on with the Golden Knights leading 13-11 five minutes in. During the next 5:45, New Haven started to take command, going out on a 16-4 run to take a 27-17 lead with 9:14 remaining in the first half. Hebert keyed the effort, scoring eight points to go along with four rebounds, three of them offensive during the spurt. Hebert's offensive rebounding in the run led to five second chance points for the Chargers, helping UNH to a 11-1 advantage in that category for the half.

Saint Rose did not go down quietly, however, as the Golden Knights responded with a 12-1 run of their own to take a 30-28 lead with 5:36 to go. From there, neither team enjoyed more than a two point lead for the remainder of the half as New Haven took a 41-39 advantage into intermission.

The second half remained tight, but the Chargers were able to continue to maintain the lead thanks to the efforts of Cruso. The senior contributed all 17 of her points off the bench in the latter stanza, leading the New Haven Reserves to a 37-13 advantage in bench points for the contest.

The Blue and Gold held a slim 73-71 lead with 2:32 remaining when the bench once again chimed in for the Chargers. Hebert and Sade King (Mount Vernon, N.Y./Mount Vernon / Hampton University) each dropped triples sandwiched around a Saint Rose bucket to push the lead back to six with 44 seconds left. With the Golden Knights forced to foul, New Haven sealed the game at the line, hitting all six of their free throws, four by Cruso and two by Moore, in the final 19 seconds.

The Chargers return to action on Saturday when they will host Dominican at 1:00 p.m.
