New Haven Holds on in Battle of Chargers

WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Briana Bradford (Waterbury, Conn./Holy Cross) scored a season-high 19 points including four three-pointers as the University of New Haven women's basketball team topped the Dominican Chargers 55-47 in a non-conference contest on Saturday afternoon at Charger Gymnasium.

With the win, New Haven is now 8-2 on the season while Dominican falls to 5-8.

In addition to Bradford's effort, Bria Moore (West Haven, Conn./Hill Regional Career) netted 14 points. Three Chargers finished with double-digits in rebounds as Lauren Hebert (North Reading, Mass./North Reading) and Aquillin Hayes (Harlem, N.Y./Wings Academy) had 11 each while Rykema Stone (Bronx, N.Y./Wings Academy) had 10. For Hebert, the 11 rebounds marked a new career-high.

Early on, it was Dominican who took control as New Haven struggled to hold on to the basketball. After Ashley LeBlanc (Methuen, Mass./Methuen) hit the first basket of the afternoon, Dominican scored the next eight points as UNH turned the ball over seven times during the first four minutes. New Haven continued to battle and got a spark off the bench from Bradford who hit a three to end the 8-0 Dominican spurt. The triple ignited a huge first half for the junior who went 4-for-5 from beyond the arc and also hit on five out of six from the free throw line in the half.

Trailing 26-22 with 2:13 remaining in the first half, New Haven began to find their stride. An 11-0 run that stretched into the second stanza and that included a pair of threes by Bradford pushed the Blue and Gold to a 33-26 lead that they would not relinquish.

Dominican made things interesting late in the contest as after New Haven went out to their largest lead of the night at 51-39 with 4:29 remaining, DC went on a quick 8-0 rush to close to four at 51-47 with 3:02 remaining, but UNH scored the final four points of the contest to secure the victory.

The Chargers now have 10 days off before their next contest when New Haven will host Saint Anselm on Wednesday, December 31 at 1:00 p.m.
