Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Anderson's Historic Triple-Double Leads Men's Basketball to Overtime Win

WEST HAVEN, Conn. Eric Anderson (Newark, N.J./Newark Tech) recorded the first triple-double in University of New Haven men's basketball history with 26 points, 28 rebounds and 10 assists as the Chargers won a thriller against Saint Anselm 78-76 in overtime at Charger Gymnasium on Wednesday afternoon.

With the win, New Haven is now 7-4 overall while Saint Anselm falls to 8-2.

Anderson's triple-double is the first in the Northeast-10 Conference this season and the second in the East Region in 2014-15. The last triple-double in the NE-10 was by Assumption's Ryan Rozsnacki on January 25, 2012 against Saint Michael's. Anderson's 28 rebounds in the game are also an NCAA Division II single-game high this season and are the most since Nathan Schumacher for Oakland City University against Free Will Baptist on January 19, 2010.

Jemal Mosley (Spring Valley, N.Y./Don Bosco Prep / Putnam Science Academy) added 23 points, hitting a career-best seven three-pointers. Jonny Ocasio (Queens, N.Y./Charlotte (Fla.) / Hillsborough Community College) netted 10 points and grabbed six rebounds.

The Hawks led for the majority of the contest as New Haven did not taste a lead until the two teams played into the extra session. After Saint Anselm's Mike McCahey hit the first bucket of overtime, Mosley came down the floor and drained his final triple of the night to give the Chargers their first lead at 70-69. On the next trip down the floor, Chris Santo hit a pair of free throws to put the Hawks up by one. 21 seconds later, Levy Gillespie (Meriden, Conn./Capital Preparatory Magnet) drained his only shot of the night, a three assisted by Anderson, to push New Haven on top 73-71.

Still, with 34 seconds remaining UNH found itself down 75-74 when Anderson hit a short jumper from the right baseline to put the Chargers on top to stay. The waning seconds were not without drama. After an Anderson free throw made it 78-76 with 0.9 seconds remaining, the Hawks tried a pass to halfcourt that Anderson knocked out of bounds to seal the win.

In the first half, things looked bleak for the Chargers as they found themselves down by as many as 13 when a jumper by Victor Joshua gave the Hawks a 36-23 advantage with 3:31 to go in the frame. New Haven battled back, scoring the final seven points of the stanza to trail 36-30 at halftime.

In the second half, the Blue and Gold continued to claw its way back into the game, finally knotting the game at 65-65 on a three-pointer by Tommy Hunt (Smithfield, R.I./St. Andrew's) with 55 seconds remaining in regulation.

For the game, New Haven held a 46-31 rebounding advantage and hit 10 treys.

The Chargers open the 2015 portion of their schedule with a Northeast-10 Conference matchup against crosstown rival Southern Connecticut State on Saturday, January 3 at 3:30 p.m. at Charger Gymnasium.
