GARDEN CITY, N.Y. –
Aquillin Hayes (Harlem, N.Y./Wings Academy) scored 21 points and pulled in 10 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the season and
Bria Moore (West Haven, Conn./Hill Regional Career) added 20 points, but the New Haven Chargers women's basketball team fell to nationally ranked No. 16 Adelphi 88-73 in a Northeast-10 Conference matchup on Saturday afternoon.
The Panthers now move to 8-0 including a 5-0 mark in the NE-10 while the Chargers fall to 6-2 overall, 2-2 in conference play.
In addition to the 20+ point efforts from Hayes and Moore, the Chargers got the first double-double of the season from
Ashley LeBlanc (Methuen, Mass./Methuen) who scored 12 points, all of them in the second half, while grabbing 11 rebounds.
The two teams played evenly through the first eight minutes as a jumper by
Elizabeth Cruso (Westerly, R.I./Westerly) made it 14-11 Adelphi with 11:57 remaining in the opening stanza. Following that bucket, however, the Panthers went on an 18-7 run during the next nine minutes to open up a 32-18 lead with 4:57 remaining in the half before eventually going into intermission with a 39-28 advantage.
New Haven came out firing in the second half, scoring the first eight points of a frame on a quartet of buckets by Hayes to slice the Adelphi lead to 39-36 just 1:56 into the frame. The Chargers continued to battle and cut the deficit further when a layup by Moore at the 14:34 mark put UNH down 43-41. Following that bucket, the Panthers went on a 10-2 spurt to take a 51-43 lead with 12:28 remaining.
Undaunted, the Blue and Gold responded, chopping the lead to 62-57 on a pair of free throws by Hayes with 7:36 to go. Trailing 64-57 with 6:16 remaining, New Haven made their final push. A free throw by Hayes and a layup by LeBlanc made it 64-60 with 5:40 left. After a Panthers bucket, Moore responded with a three-pointer to cut things to 66-63 at the 5:03 mark before Adelphi pulled away.
The Chargers are now off until December 17 when they will head to Albany, N.Y. to take on the Saint Rose Golden Knights at 5:30 p.m.
