Women's Tennis Swings Past Yellow Jackets, 7-2

RESULTS

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Samantha Nigri (Carmel, N.Y./Carmel) and Alexandra Sharshakov (Reisterstown, Md./Garrison Forest) led the University of New Haven to a 7-2 Northeast-10 Conference victory at American International College Thursday afternoon. Nigri and Sharshakov paired in No. 2 doubles and won their singles matches to record three wins for the Chargers.

New Haven improved to 7-4 overall and 5-4 in the NE-10, while the Yellow Jackets dropped to 1-4 on the season and in conference play.

Nigri and Sharshakov led off the meet with an 8-2 victory in doubles, while Sarah Burzin (Ivoryton, Conn./Valley Regional) and Nan Sirihorachai (Plainsboro, N.J./West Windsor-Plainsboro North) teamed in No. 3 doubles in an 8-0 shutout victory. The Chargers led 2-1 after doubles, but quickly improved their lead in the first singles matches.

Christina Santos (Wolcott, Conn./Wolcott) won in straight sets, 6-0 and 6-0, to put the Chargers ahead 3-1. Nigri then won 6-3 and 6-4 for New Haven's fourth team point. Sharshakov's tough three-set victory, 6-2, 2-6 and 6-3, to seal the match for UNH. She improved to a team-leading 9-2 on the season. Additionally, Lindsey Conley (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury ) and Angelica Pecci (Watertown, Conn./Holy Cross) won in No. 4 and No. 5 singles, respectively. 

The Chargers return to action on Saturday, April 5 in another NE-10 match at Southern New Hampshire University. Match time is set for 1 p.m. in Manchester, N.H. After Saturday, UNH hosts a pair of conference matches against Saint Michael's and Adelphi on Saturday, April 12 and Sunday, April 13 at Amity High School in Woodbridge, Conn. to close out the regular season.
