Women’s Soccer Takes NE-10 Opener at Saint Anselm, 3-2

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The University of New Haven women's soccer team opened its 2014 Northeast-10 schedule at Saint Anselm on Saturday afternoon, coming away with a 3-2 result. Amber Simms (Southport, England/Southport), Marisa Garcia (Babylon, N.Y./West Babylon) and Shannon Enright (Ashford, Conn./E.O. Smith) scored the Chargers' goals in the Chargers' fourth consecutive win over the Hawks.

With the road victory, New Haven evens its record at 2-2-0 and moves to 1-0-0 in the NE-10. Saint Anselm drops to 1-1-0 overall with an 0-1-0 conference tally.

In addition to the offensive outpouring, Moriah Saidel (Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee) made a career-high 14 saves to earn the victory in goal.

For the third straight outing, Simms began the New Haven scoring. The All-America forward was the final piece of a 3-on-3 breakaway, sliding to redirect a pass from Garcia past Hawks' goalkeeper Cassie Quattropani.

After her 24th career marker, Simms moves into sixth on the Chargers' all-time scoring list with 59 career points. She is also sixth all-time in goals for the Blue and Gold.

Less than three minutes later, Garcia doubled the New Haven lead with a blast from inside the box. After her three-point day, Garcia has totaled a goal and three assists on the young 2014 campaign.

Rachel Gillies would score on a breakaway in the 21st minute to cut the margin to 2-1, and the offenses then went stagnant until the closing minutes of the first half.

In the 41st minute, Enright capitalized on a poor clear attempt to bury the first goal of her career and stake the Chargers to a 3-1 lead.

Just 62 seconds before the intermission, Alexis Elowitch found the net for the Hawks on an assist by Kristen MacGray. However, that marker would end the day's scoring as the Chargers' left the Granite State with a 3-2 victory.

Saidel's 14 saves – the most since Natasha Purchla (Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot) turned away 14 against Assumption last fall – earned the senior her first result of the fall. Quattropani made five saves for the hosts.

The Chargers continue Northeast-10 action on the road this week with a trip to Assumption on Wednesday, Sept. 17. The Blue and Gold return to Kayo Field for a Saturday, Sept. 20 visit from Bentley. Action under the lights kicks off at 7 p.m.
