Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Chargers Edged at Saint Rose, 2-1, in Northeast-10 Opener

ALBANY, N.Y. – All of the scoring came in the first half as the University of New Haven men's soccer team dropped its Northeast-10 Conference opener by a score of 2-1 at Saint Rose on Tuesday evening. Alain Laurent (Attleboro, Mass./Attleboro) had the goal for the Chargers.

After the road loss, New Haven stands at 1-3-0 overall and 0-1-0 in the NE-10. The Golden Knights notch their first win of the fall, improving to 1-2-1 with a 1-0-0 conference mark.

The hosts starting the scoring 24 minutes into action on a Nick Iuorno header. Laurent responded equalizer in the 32nd minute, receiving a cross from Brian Rebelo (Danbury, Conn./Danbury / Central Connecticut State University) and heading it into the net to knot the match at 1-1.

Laurent's goal was his first of the season and the third of his career. The sophomore dished out two assists in the Chargers' last outing – a 4-0 trouncing of Felician on Saturday. Newcomer Rebelo picks up his first career point for the Blue and Gold.

The eventual game-winner came off the foot of Saint Rose's Marco Pavlin just 74 seconds before halftime. Pavlin stepped into a blast from 35 yards out and found daylight passed New Haven goalkeeper Marc Scelsa (Islip, N.Y./Islip) to run the margin to 2-1.

That tally proved final as neither squad would score after the intermission.

Scelsa (1-1-0) finished with five saves for the Chargers. Colan Balkwell turned away two shots for the Golden Knights.

New Haven returns to the pitch at defending NCAA Champion Southern New Hampshire on Saturday, Sept. 20. Action returns to Kayo Field on Tuesday, Sept. 23 for a non-conference clash with St. Thomas Aquinas.
