BOX SCORESPRINGFIELD, Mass. -Â After earning three points with a sweep in doubles, the University of New Haven nearly shutout American International in an 8-1 victory Sunday afternoon in Springfield.
Alexandra Sharshakov (Reisterstown, Md./Garrison Forest),
Samantha Nigri (Carmel, N.Y./Carmel) and
Alexia Petruzziello (North Haven, Conn./North Haven) each played a part in two victories in the match for the Chargers.
With the victory, the Blue and Gold improve to 2-3 overall and in the Northeast-10 Conference. The Yellow Jackets drop to 0-4 on the year.
Sharshakov and
Lindsey Conley (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury ) teamed for an 8-6 win in No. 1 doubles over Ana Paula Simoes and Isabel Daudt. Sharshakov also defeated Simoes in three sets in No. 1 singles 2-6, 6-4, 10-3. Nigri and Petruzziello downed Jasmine Byrd and Eleanna Fulop 8-0 in No. 2 doubles. Both also won singles competition with Nigri taking a 6-3, 1-6, 10-7 decision in No. 2 singles over Daudt.
Christina Santos (Wolcott, Conn./Wolcott) and
Angelica Pecci (Watertown, Conn./Holy Cross) won by default in No. 3 doubles.
Sarah Burzin (Ivoryton, Conn./Valley Regional) and Santos also won by default in No. 5 and No. 6 singles, respectively.
New Haven continues Northeast-10 Conference play this week when it travels to Franklin Pierce on Wednesday, Sept. 24. Match time in Rindge, N.H. is set for 3 p.m.
