Chargers Upended by Nova Southeastern in Five Sets

BOX SCORE LAKELAND, Fla. – The University of New Haven women's volleyball team concludes its four-match swing at the FSC/Terrace Hotel Classic with a five-set loss to Nova Southeastern on Saturday evening. Three Chargers posted double-doubles in the 3-2 defeat.
 
New Haven finishes the weekend in the Sunshine State at 0-4, while the Sharks move to 1-2. Nova Southeastern took the match by set scores of 19-25, 21-25, 25-23, 25-18 and 15-9.
 
Outside hitters Kristen Lee (Colorado Springs, Colo./Liberty) and Margo Meteyer (Madison, Wis./Madison West) posted double-digit kills with 14 and 10, respectively. Lee added 11 digs and Meteyer posted 14 to complete double-doubles. Setter Kaulana Ane (Paia, Hawai'i/Kamehameha) also notched a double-double – her second of the weekend – with 40 assists and 14 digs.
 
Kristy Atufunwa (Denver, Colo./Denver East) added 13 kills for New Haven, which hit a collective .176 in the contest. Alex Bussey (Atlanta, Ga./Pace Academy) notched nine finishers, Ane had four, Hayley Wilson (Denver, Colo./Overland) chipped in with three kills and Kea-Marie Olaso (Kailua, Hawai'i/Le Jardin Academy) added one as the Chargers' libero.
 
Olaso led a total of five Chargers' in double figures with 19 digs. Annika Hacker (Bayreuth, Germany/Littleton (Colo.)) came off the bench to contribute 12 digs. At the net, Atufunwa had a hand in four of New Haven's five blocks, including a pair of solo stuffs.
 
Olaso and Hacker dropped in two service aces apiece, while Meteyer and Devin Smith (Middletown, N.Y./Pine Bush) each landed one winner.
 
Nova Southeastern was led by 20 kills and 14 digs from Sydney Cook. Katie Pyles doled out 51 assists for the Sharks, and Candice Johnson had 29 digs.
 
The Blue and Gold return home to open their East Region and Northeast-10 Conference slates on Saturday, Sept. 13 against Franklin Pierce. Queens will also visit Charger Gymnasium next Saturday as a part of a tri-match with the Chargers and Ravens.
