WALTHAM, Mass. – The University of New Haven men's basketball team dropped a Northeast-10 Conference game Wednesday night at Bentley, 65-56. Senior forward
Eric Anderson (Newark, N.J./Newark Tech) paced the Chargers with 15 points and 14 rebounds.
With the loss, the Chargers fall to 11-6 overall and 6-5 in the NE-10. With the win, the Falcons improve to 11-7 and 6-6 in conference play.
Along with Anderson,
Jemal Mosley (Spring Valley, N.Y./Don Bosco Prep / Putnam Science Academy) added double figures scoring with 13.
Samir McDaniels (Roxbury, Mass./New Mission) added nine points and four rebounds.
The Falcons and Chargers played to a 17-17 tie in the first 11:31 of the first half.
Jonny Ocasio (Queens, N.Y./Charlotte (Fla.) / Hillsborough Community College) knotted the score with a free throw at the 8:29 mark. The teams then exchanged runs with Bentley going on a 7-0 spurt and New Haven on a 6-0 run as an Anderson jumper cut the Falcon lead to 24-23 with 4:38 on the clock. Bentley controlled the final minutes and sunk a three-pointer at the buzzer to take a 36-27 lead into halftime.
Bentley shot 48.1 percent (13-27) from the floor in the first half, while the Chargers hit 37.9 percent (11-29). The Falcons also connected on 66.7 percent (8-12) from beyond the arc.
The Chargers cut the Bentley lead to as few as six points with 8:57 left in the second half, but the Falcons controlled the lead the entire stanza. A McDaniels layup at the 5:43 mark cut the Bentley advantage to 57-50. In the final five minutes, the Falcons sunk a pair of three-pointers to seal the victory.
Levy Gillespie (Meriden, Conn./Capital Preparatory Magnet) put in a jumper with four seconds remaining as the Falcons won by a final margin of nine.
The Chargers shot 38.2 percent from the field in the game, while the Falcons buried 44 percent of their shots. Bentley shot 56.5 percent from long range and the Chargers struggled from three-point territory, hitting 26.7 percent (4-15).
New Haven returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 24 when it hosts Stonehill in another Northeast-10 Conference cross-divisional game. Tip-off at Charger Gymnasium is set for 1:30 p.m.
