Jonny Ocasio (Queens, N.Y./Charlotte (Fla.) / Hillsborough Community College) scored 18 points to lead three New Haven players in double figures, but the Chargers were upended by the Southern New Hampshire Penmen 77-55 in a Northeast-10 Conference matchup on Thursday evening at Charger Gymnasium.
With the win, the Penmen improve to 13-5 overall and are 11-3 in the NE-10. New Haven is now 11-8 with a 6-7 mark in conference.
Ocasio scored his 18 points by hitting 7-of-10 shots from the field including a 3-for-4 performance from beyond the arc.
Eric Anderson (Newark, N.J./Newark Tech) recorded his 12
th double-double of the season behind 11 points and 13 rebounds.
Jemal Mosley (Spring Valley, N.Y./Don Bosco Prep / Putnam Science Academy) added 10 points for the Chargers.
The first half was a tight contest that saw neither team hold more than a seven point lead. An Ocasio layup with just more than three minutes to go in the stanza tied the game at 29-29 before Southern New Hampshire took a 38-34 lead into halftime.
Early in the second half, the game looked like it would remain tight. New Haven took a one point lead at 44-43 on a trey by
Levy Gillespie (Meriden, Conn./Capital Preparatory Magnet) four minutes into the frame. After a quick Penmen run, the Chargers brought the game back to a single point at 48-47 on a layup by Anderson with 12:46 remaining. From there, Southern New Hampshire used a 22-4 run to pull away.
New Haven has a short turnaround before concluding NE-10 cross-division play at Merrimack on Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
