Men's Basketball Shines Defensively in Downing Merrimack

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – The University of New Haven men's basketball team turned in one of its best defensive performances in recent memory as the Chargers downed the Merrimack Warriors 60-39 in a Northeast-10 contest at Hammel Court Saturday afternoon.

With the win, New Haven is now 12-8 with a 7-7 record in the NE-10. Merrimack falls to 10-8 overall with a 5-8 conference record.

Jonny Ocasio (Queens, N.Y./Charlotte (Fla.) / Hillsborough Community College) led the Chargers with his first career double-double behind 18 points and 10 rebounds, hitting on 4-of-6 shots from beyond the arc. Jemal Mosley (Spring Valley, N.Y./Don Bosco Prep / Putnam Science Academy) scored a game-high 19 points for New Haven while Eric Anderson (Newark, N.J./Newark Tech) pulled in 14 rebounds while delivering six assists.

The Chargers shined defensively throughout the game, holding the Warriors to just 23.0 percent shooting from the field and a 4-for-21 performance from three-point range. The 39 points New Haven allowed are the fewest since the Chargers beat Le Moyne 73-38 on Feb. 16, 2013.

The first half was close with neither team holding more than a four point lead. Trailing 23-20 late in the half, New Haven scored the final five points of the frame behind an Ocasio trey and a pair of free throws by Mosley to take a 25-23 advantage into halftime.

It was the second half that saw the Blue and Gold take its defense to a higher level, allowing the Warriors to shoot just 5-for-34 from the floor (14.7 percent). As part of the effort, New Haven allowed Merrimack a mere six points during the final 10 minutes of the game, outscoring the Warriors 19-6 in the process. Providing the offense during the game-closing stretch were Ocasio and Tommy Huny who netted five points apiece.

New Haven returns to action on Wednesday when it battles cross-town rival Southern Connecticut State on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
