NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Senior forward
Eric Anderson (Newark, N.J./Newark Tech) scored 20 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, but the University of New Haven men's basketball team dropped a Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division contest 61-46 at Southern Connecticut State Wednesday night. The game marked Anderson's sixth 20-point, 10-rebound performance of the season.
With the loss, the Chargers fall to 12-9 overall and 7-8 in the Northeast-10 Conference. The Owls improve to 16-5 overall and 11-3 in conference play.
Anderson added three assist, two blocks and one steal in the full 40 minutes of play.
Jonny Ocasio (Queens, N.Y./Charlotte (Fla.) / Hillsborough Community College) was the only other Charger in double figures with 13 points and nine rebounds.
Jemal Mosley (Spring Valley, N.Y./Don Bosco Prep / Putnam Science Academy) chipped in with nine points and three boards, while
Tommy Hunt (Smithfield, R.I./St. Andrew's) rounded out scoring for UNH with four.
Tylon Smith led the Owls with 19 points and nine rebounds.
The Chargers shot 33.3 percent from the floor (16-48), 28.6 percent from downtown (6-21) and 57.1 percent (8-14) at the foul line. New Haven was out-rebounded by SCSU 40-34, while also coming out on the top end of a 14-8 turnover differential.
The Owls jumped out to an early lead at Moore Field House and held an eight-point lead, 19-11, midway through the first half. With back-to-back three-pointers, Southern Connecticut State took its largest lead of 14 points with 3:15 left in the opening half. The Chargers cut the lead back to single digits in the final minute, but three free throws as time expired in the half, gave the Owls a 33-23 lead at the half.
In the first 10 minutes of the second half, New Haven kept the score within 10, but 14-3 run for the Owls pushed their lead to 59-39 with 6:45 on the clock. The Chargers 7-2 run in the final six minutes narrowed the victory to 15 for SCSU,
The Blue and Gold return to action on Saturday, Feb. 7 when Saint Rose visits Charger Gymnasium. Game time is set for 1:30 p.m.
