GOFFSTOWN, N.H. – The University of New Haven women's basketball team used a balanced scoring effort and a solid shooting performance as the Chargers won their fifth in a row, downing the Saint Anselm Hawks 77-55 in a Northeast-10 Conference contest on Wednesday evening.
New Haven is now 11-2 on the season and carries a 5-2 mark in the NE-10. The Hawks fall to 4-9 with a 2-6 conference record.
Four players placed In double figure for the Chargers led by
Aquillin Hayes (Harlem, N.Y./Wings Academy) and
Briana Bradford (Waterbury, Conn./Holy Cross) who netted 15 each with Hayes leading the way for New Haven with nine rebounds.
Ashley LeBlanc (Methuen, Mass./Methuen) and
India Dotson (Akron, Ohio/Frederick (Md.) / Monmouth University) each scored 10 in the game. For Dotson, the point total represented a new career high.
The UNH effort was led by a good shooting overall as New Haven hit on 27-of-59 shots from the field (45.8 percent) as well as going 6-for-13 from beyond the arc and 17-for-20 at the free throw line.
The first half was marked by two significant runs for the Chargers. After Saint Anselm jumped out to an early 8-2 lead, New Haven scored the next 11 points with LeBlanc tallying six as UNH took a 13-8 lead slightly more than eight minutes into the game. The Hawks closed the gap to 16-13 at the 10:20 mark, but the Chargers once again surged, going on a 10-0 run to push their advantage to 26-13 with 6:13 remaining in the frame. Saint Anselm did not go quietly, however, slicing the lead to 40-34 at halftime.
New Haven extended their halftime lead to 11 at 49-38 on a Hayes layup with 14:14 to go in the second half. The Hawks made one more push, cutting the deficit to 51-48 in less than four minutes. The Chargers responded, putting the game away with a 16-4 spurt to take a 68-52 at the 3:58 mark before cementing the final score.
New Haven returns home on Saturday when they take on Assumption in an NE-10 showdown at Charger Gymnasium. Tipoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
