Kennelly and Rios with Triple-Doubles as Volleyball Downs Le Moyne in Four

WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Junior outside hitter Meghan Kennelly (Detroit, Mich./Eisenhower) and freshman setter Kristine Rios (Miami, Fla./Coral Reef) both finished with triple-doubles, leading the University of New Haven volleyball team to a four-set (25-22, 25-19, 24-26, 26-24) victory over Le Moyne. With the victory, the Chargers improve to 11-9 overall and 3-2 in the Northeast-10, while Le Moyne falls to 13-5 overall and 4-2 in the NE-10.  

Kennelly finished her third match of the season with 20-plus kills, finishing with a match-best 21 against the Dolphins. Through the four-set match, Kennelly hit .231 with nine errors in 52 total attempts. She also added 19 assists and 26 digs, with the later her second game of the season with 20 or more digs.

Rios completed her first double figure kills match of her career with 12 kills, hitting a team-high .324 with just one error in 34 total attempts. She also finished with a team-high 37 assists and added 15 stops on the defensive end of the floor. The triple-doubles for Kennelly and Rios are the first of the season for any Charger.

Joining Rios and Kennelly in leading the hitting efforts was senior Kristen Lee (Colorado Springs, Colo./Liberty) who also finished with 12 kills, while she was also among the defensive leaders with 20 digs. Alex Bussey (Atlanta, Ga./Pace Academy) and Micki Impellizeri (Seaford, N.Y./St. Anthony's) also chipped in with seven kills apiece, with Impellizeri leading the pair with a .286 hitting average with one error in 21 attempts.

As a team, the Chargers closed out their third Northeast-10 victory with a .154 hitting average, combining for 62 kills in 214 attempts with 29 errors. Also on the offensive end of the floor, New Haven combined for six service aces, led by Brianna Mirmina (Bethany, Conn./Amity Regional) who finished with three.

Defensively, five Chargers finished with double figure digs, led by libero Devin Smith (Middletown, N.Y./Pine Bush) who finished with 27 digs, her ninth match of the season with 20 or more. IN addition to Kennelly (26) and Rios (15) joining Smith in double figures was Lee and Mirmina who finished with 20 and 13, respectively. As a team, New Haven finished with four blocks with Kennelly and Bussey each leading the team with a solo block and a block assist.

The Chargers begin a three-match road swing on Tuesday night when they travel to Saint Rose. First serve in the Northeast-10 battle is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
