Dawson Scores to Lift Women's Soccer to OT Win

QUEENS, N.Y.Ashley Dawson (Northbridge, Mass./Northbridge) scored just shy of eight minutes into the first overtime as the University of New Haven women's soccer team defeated the Queens (N.Y.) Knights in a non-conference match 2-1 on Tuesday afternoon.

With the win, New Haven is now 8-4-3. Queens falls to 4-7-2.

After a scoreless first half, the Chargers recorded the initial tally of the game in the 51st minute when Danielle Widmann (East Meadow, N.Y./East Meadow) scored her first goal of the season as she received a through ball from Erica Silhan (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay Shore) and beat the keeper to the right side.

Queens tied the game late as in the 79th minute, Erin Vernillo took a short cross from Nicolette Scrozzo and one-timed the ball into the back of the net.

As time wound down in the first overtime session, New Haven netted the game winner. After a scramble at the top of the box, Dawson collected the loose ball and sent it into the top right corner for her third goal of the year and the win.

In goal, Natasha Purchla (Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot) made six saves for the Chargers who outshot the Knights 12-10.
