West Haven, Conn. – The University of New Haven volleyball team dropped its first home game of the season, falling in four sets (27-29, 23-25, 25-23, 21-25) to the visiting Adelphi Panthers on Tuesday night. With the loss, New Haven falls to 13-11 overall and 5-4 in the Northeast-10, while Adelphi improves to 18-4 overall and 9-0 in the NE-10.
Leading the Chargers on the evening was junior outside hitter Meghan Kennelly (Detroit, Mich./Eisenhower) who finished with 19 kills and 16 digs, her 11th double double of the season. For the match, Kennelly hit .183 with eight errors in 60 total attempts. Joining her with a double double in kills and digs was senior Kristen Lee (Colorado Springs, Colo./Liberty) who finished with 16 kills and 14 digs.
Overall as a team, the Chargers finished the match hitting .121 with 50 kills and 29 errors in 174 attacks. Following Kennelly and Lee in leading the squad was graduate student Micki Impellizeri (Seaford, N.Y./St. Anthony's) who finished with five kills and hit a team-high .214 for the match with two miscues in 14 attempts. Freshman setter Kristine Rios (Miami, Fla./Coral Reef) led the Chargers with 40 assists, her fourth match of the season with 40 or more assists and the first since September 18 against Dowling when she finished with a career-high 51.
Defensively, five Chargers finished with double figure digs. Leading the team overall was freshman libero Brianna Mirmina (Bethany, Conn./Amity Regional) who finished with 17 digs, a career-high and her third-straight match with double digit digs. In addition to Kennelly and Lee, Rios finished with 16 digs and defensive specialist Lindsay Kim added 11.
As a team, New Haven finished with eight blocks, led individually by Impellizeri who finished with four. Kennelly, Lexis Peterson (Windsor, N.Y./Windsor Central) and Damianis Eusebio (Miramar, Fla./University School) all added three blocks.
The Chargers remain home for a second-straight match when Southern New Hampshire visits Charger Gymnasium on Friday, October 30. Fans are encouraged to wear their Halloween costume with prizes being awarded for the best costumes. First serve in the Fright Night match-up is scheduled for 7 p.m.
