West Haven, Conn. – The University of New Haven volleyball team posted a four-set (24-26,26-24, 25-21, 25-23) victory over the visiting Southern New Hampshire Penmen on Friday night at Charger Gymnasium. The Chargers improve to 14-11 overall and 6-4 in the Northeast-10, while Southern New Hampshire falls to 9-13 overall and 4-6 in the NE-10.
Leading the Chargers efforts was junior outside hitter Meghan Kennelly (Detroit, Mich./Eisenhower) who finished with 21 kills and a .147 hitting average. She also added 16 digs for her second-straight and 12th double double of the season. Kennelly's 21 kills is her second match in conference play with 20 or more kills and the fourth time this season she has finished with 20-plus.
Joining her in leading the hitting efforts was graduate middle blocker Micki Impellizeri (Seaford, N.Y./St. Anthony's) who chipped in nine kills on a .333 hitting average with three errors in 18 attempts. Rounding out the leading hitters was senior Kristen Lee (Colorado Springs, Colo./Liberty) and freshman Kristine Rios (Miami, Fla./Coral Reef) who finished with eight kills apiece. Rios, the rookie setter, led the Chargers hitting overall with a .375 average with two errors in 16 attempts.
Overall, New Haven finished the match with 56 kills and a .165 hitting average with 27 errors in 176 attempts. Rios led the Chargers with 41 assists, while libero Brianna Mirmina added six. The 41 assists for Rios is her second-straight match with 40 or more and the fifth time this season she has had 40-plus.
Defensively, the Chargers were led by their libero, Mirmina, who finished with a career-high 33 digs. This is the fourth-straight match Mirmina has finished with double figures on the defensive side of the net, while she surpassed her previous season-high of 17 digs set last match against Adelphi.
As a team, New Haven finished with 10 blocks, led individually by Impellizeri who finished with six. Alex Bussey (Atlanta, Ga./Pace Academy) joined her in leading the team with four put backs, while Rios added three. The Chargers also combined for four service aces with Rios leading the way with two.
The Chargers will play their next two matches on the road with the first a trip to Springfield, Mass. for a date with the American International Yellow Jackets. First serve in the conference match is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 3.
