Springfield, Mass. – The University of New Haven volleyball team dropped a four-set (26-24, 25-27, 17-25, 20-25) decision on the road against the American International Yellow Jackets on Tuesday night. The Chargers fall to 14-12 overall and 6-5 in the Northeast-10, while AIC improves to 13-9 overall and 7-4 in the NE-10.
Leading the Chargers hitting was senior outside hitter Kristen Lee (Colorado Springs, Colo./Liberty) who finished with 12 kills and a .205 hitting average with three errors in 44 attempts. She also chipped in four digs, two assists, an ace and a block. Joining her with double figures in the hitting column was junior outside hitter Meghan Kennelly (Detroit, Mich./Eisenhower) who finished with 11 kills.
Sophomore middle hitter Alex Bussey (Atlanta, Ga./Pace Academy) led New Haven's hitting efforts on the game with a .429 average, suffering just one error in 14 attempts with seven going down as kills. Overall, New Haven finished the match with 44 kills and a .159 hitting average with 19 errors in 157 attempts. Freshman setter Kristine Rios (Miami, Fla./Coral Reef) led the Chargers with 33 assists, while hitting .267 with four kills and zero errors in 15 attempts.
Rios also led the Chargers defensively with 16 digs, one of three players to finish in double figures. She was joined by freshmen Lindsey Kim (Rye Brook, N.Y./Blind Brook) and Brianna Mirmina (Bethany, Conn./Amity Regional) who finished with 15 and 13 digs, respectively. On the block, Bussey again led the Chargers with seven total blocks, one shy of her career-high. Overall as a team, New Haven finished with a season-best 14 blocks.
The Chargers continue their final regular season road trip with a second-straight match away from home on Friday when they travel to Waltham, Mass. for a date with the Bentley Falcons. First serve at Dana Athletic Center is set for 7:30 p.m.
