West Haven, Conn. – The University of New Haven women's soccer team scored a 2-0 victory over Saint Anselm on Senior Day at Kayo Field thanks to goals from Marisa Garcia (Babylon, N.Y./Babylon) and Sierra Stein (Sherman, Conn./Immaculate), securing a postseason berth as the seventh seed in the Northeast-10 Conference tournament. The Chargers (10-5-3, 6-5-3 NE-10) will meet Saint Rose in Albany, N.Y. on Tuesday in the quarterfinals with a 4:00 p.m. start time scheduled.
The Chargers scored 80 seconds apart with the first coming as the 11th goal of the season for senior Marisa Garcia (Babylon, N.Y./Babylon). The striker worked around her defender for an open look at the goal, sending her shot to the upper right corner to break the stalemate.
The insurance goal came off the boot of Sierra Stein (Sherman, Conn./Immaculate) thanks to a feed from Garcia who provided the flick pass ahead to Stein who bent her shot around the Saint Anselm netminder to the lower right corner.
For the game, sophomore keeper Deandra Nash (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) finished with seven saves, putting her in the century club for the season with 100 saves. Overall, Nash faced 19 shots as the Hawks held a 19-10 advantage in that category.
Neither team could find the back of the net in the opening half with the visiting Hawks owning a 7-5 advantage in shots through the first 45 minutes. Saint Anselm marked seven shots in the half before New Haven would get their first on the board with a flurry of shots for the home team over the final 10 minutes.
Both keepers would finish with two saves in the opening half. The Chargers best opportunity came late in the period as Danielle Widmann (East Meadow, N.Y./East Meadow) came off the bench and found herself with a one-on-one opportunity. The Hawks defender thwarted the opportunity when she stepped into Widmann's path and used a heel tap to end the threat.
