WORCESTER, Mass. – A Hail Mary attempt in the end zone as time expired went incomplete as the University of New Haven football team dropped a 23-17 decision to the Assumption Grey Hounds in Northeast-10 action on Friday night. With the loss, New Haven falls to 3-3 overall and 3-2 in the Northeast-10.
Sophomore quarterback Ajee Patterson (Neptune, N.J./Neptune) completed his fourth start of the season with a career-high 307 yards, completing 29-of-54 pass attempts, one of which went for a 28-yard touchdown to Henry Adegunle (Rockaway, N.Y./Channel View). Patterson's primary target was DeeJay White (Brooklyn, N.Y./Sheepshead Bay / Bowling Green State University) who finished with six catches for 58 yards. Adegunle, Devin Martin (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville), Ty Headen (Newark, N.J./American History) and Andre Anderson (New Haven, Conn./James Hillhouse) all finished with four catches with Adegunle leading the four with 56 yards.
Also setting a career-high against Assumption was sophomore kicker Danny Stock (North Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge) who drilled his sixth field goal of the season, going for 43 yards, nine more than his previous career-high of 34 set at Bentley.
On the ground, the Chargers were led by Trevor Officer (Monroe, N.Y./Monroe-Woodbury) who finished with 96 net yards on 22 carries, including an eight-yard touchdown, his second of the season. Andre Anderson (New Haven, Conn./James Hillhouse) finished second among the Chargers running back, finishing with 31 net yards on 14 carries.
Leading the New Haven defense was Matt Zakrzewski (Traverse City, Mich./Saint Francis / Indiana) who was one of two Chargers who finished in double figures, closing out the game with 12 stops. Tyler Condit (Caldwell, N.J./James Caldwell) finished with 11, his fifth game of the season in double figures.
FIRST QUARTER NOTES
· Ajee Patterson (Neptune, N.J./Neptune) opened up the game with a perfectly placed pass to DeeJay White (Brooklyn, N.Y./Sheepshead Bay / Bowling Green State University) for a 22-yard pickup. The Chargers then used three-straight rushes to pick up two more first downs with Patterson running for seven yards for the first and Trevor Officer (Monroe, N.Y./Monroe-Woodbury) breaking through the middle for the second.
· Andre Anderson (New Haven, Conn./James Hillhouse) led the Chargers in the opening quarter with 22 yards on the ground, all of which came on the drive which ended the quarter for New Haven. Officer finished just behind him with 19 yards, both carrying the ball three times.
· Patterson finished with four completions in the first quarter for a total of 44 yards with the 22-yard completion to White the longest. White led the receiving corps with 38 total yards on three catches.
· Defensively, New Haven was led by Matt Zakrzewski (Traverse City, Mich./Saint Francis / Indiana) who finished with five tackles, while Mark Clements (Mays Landing, N.J./Oakcrest / Worcester Academy) added three.
SECOND QUARTER NOTES
· The Chargers held the possession for the final 10 minutes of the second quarter, marching 92 yards but were stopped at the line as time expired on a fourth and one opportunity. That drive was a total of 23 plays including 11 rushes, five each by Trevor Officer (Monroe, N.Y./Monroe-Woodbury) and Andre Anderson (New Haven, Conn./James Hillhouse) as well as Ajee Patterson (Neptune, N.J./Neptune) going 6-of-8 in the air. Included in those passes were three for 10-plus yards, the longest of which was a 22-yard completion to Rishawn Harris (Springfield, Mass./Putnam Vocational Technical Academy) on third and 18.
· For the quarter, Patterson finished 7-of-10 for 69 yards with his primary target DeeJay White (Brooklyn, N.Y./Sheepshead Bay / Bowling Green State University) who had four catches for 41 yards.
· On the ground, Officer led the Chargers with 27 yards on eight carries, while Anderson finished with 17 yards also on eight carries.
· Defensively, Drake Harris (Union, N.J./Union) led the Chargers with four tackles.
THIRD QUARTER NOTES
· After a huge defensive stop and three and out for Assumption, the Chargers found themselves with great field possession for their first drive of the half. Starting at the Assumption 39, the Chargers completed the drive thanks to a pair of catches from Henry Adegunle (Rockaway, N.Y./Channel View), a 13-yard grab and a 27-yard grab, the second of which was good for seven points. The scoring drive was a total of seven plays and took 2:39 off the clock.
· On the ensuing kickoff, Nigel Davis (Williamsville, N.Y./Saint Joseph's Collegiate Institute) collected a Greyhound fumble to again set the Chargers up with great field possession, starting at the Assumption 29. This time around, Danny Stock (North Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge) completed the drive with his longest field goal of the season, a 43-yard attempt. That drive was a total of four plays and took 1:22 off the clock.
· Trevor Officer (Monroe, N.Y./Monroe-Woodbury) led the ground game in the third quarter with six runs for a total of 20 yards. In the air, Patterson finished 3-of-8 for 38 yards, with the longest pass of the quarter the 27-yard touchdown to Adegunle.
· Defensively, New Haven was led by Tyler Condit (Caldwell, N.J./James Caldwell) who picked up five tackles.
FOURTH QUARTER NOTES
· Trevor Officer (Monroe, N.Y./Monroe-Woodbury) completed a seven play 54-yard drive with an eight-yard run for his second touchdown of the season. Included in the drive for New Haven was a pair of double-digit passes from Ajee Patterson (Neptune, N.J./Neptune), a 12-yarder and an 18-yarder, both of which went to Devin Martin (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville).
· Patterson finished the final period completing 15-of-23 attempts for an impressive 156 yards. Among his primary targets in the fourth quarter was Ty Headen (Newark, N.J./American History) who finished with four catches for 31 yards.
· On the ground, Officer led the way with six carries for 29 yards.
